Guys, I hope you can help me out. I travelled to the Sports Surgery Clinic in Santry on Wednesday and again today. Both times on the way home I was flashed by two separate cars. I was in the right lane (close to the concrete divider) I was doing 120kph Dublin to carlow both times.

Did I miss something? did I do something wrong? why did they flash their lights at me??

That lane is for over taking, keep to the left.

I didn't have my high beams on as it would have interfered with the other lane of traffic opposite.

You were in the right lane, Were you overtaking? otherwise you should not be in that lane. Left lane is for driving, right lane is for overtaking unless the left lane is full.

Read the rules of the road again and don't take to the road again until you know how to drive on a motorway, the overtaking lane is for just that overtaking, it's not a "fast lane".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,862 ✭✭✭✭January

Yes, that's the over taking lane, not the go fast lane. Keep left unless over taking!

just to confirm as i have only been on the road 1 a year now but are the two lanes exclusive ted. or is one strictly for overtaking slower drivers? also to confirm are both lanes 120?

Incorrect lane. Drive left. It's part of the ROTR.

Did you have your lights on? Plenty of people forget to turn them on and dont notice with the street lights.

Are all your lights working? Check them all.

Limit is 120kph, if someone wants to to 300kph in the overtaking lane that's their business, you only use the right lane to overtake, nothing else.

Wrong lane. Its an overtaking lane, you should only be in it if you are overtaking, not staying in it and blocking traffic behind you.

    FYP

This is exactly why motorway driving should form some part of the test in this country.

I've done a lot of M50 miles recently, and I swear the men in white coats are going to have to come and take me off it one of these days.

    Why fix?

If you are staying in the overtaking lane you are blocking any potential traffic coming from behind. If your observation is also poor along with your positioning, you could make the more impatient of drivers behind you to do an undertake which obviously brings a higher probability of something happening over if people were in the correct lanes in the first place.

I passed my test first time flying colours, i was centre lane and was not slow. i was in the catch of overtaking a few cars going at 100kph

Passing the driving test means bugger all in relation to motorway driving, hence it's so poor here.

Kudos for asking the question, and you'll always have the fist shaking tiny willies that tell you to stay off the road until XYZ, ignore them. However there is only one driving lane, the left lane, the others are for overtaking (usually). There can be times you're forced into a lane such as the Malahide exit at the end of the M50.

People flashing you is 90% you're in their way. If someone follows you back into a lane it can be for any number of reasons, including they were just trying to be nice and warn you that you were being a hazard, exit, or they didn't realise their own speed.

Your speedo will under read but regardless it's not upto you to police the speed of other drivers - not that there was any suggestion thats what you tried to do.

If you were just overtaking and not sitting in the right hand lane too long then I'd say they were flashing because they were douchebags.

These sorts of morons speed along and get crabby when someone gets in their way (even when overtaking at the legal limit). Never mind them, pull back in to the left when it's safe to do so and let these fools continue rolling along at 160 and clock up the points.

You were In the overtaking lane. You said you were overtaking another car did you not check your mirrors & try and gauge the speed of the cars coming behind you? People pick up speed in that lane to overtake the car in front. Then move back into the left lane. Sounds to me like you were going to slow for the other drivers coming behind you. In other words you forced them to reduce there speed.

But if he was overtaking at 120 then if someone comes up behind doing 160 then it's not his fault. They're the ones driving too fast and as long as he didn't dangerously move into their path then it's not his problem that they're breaking the law.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

not just on motorway people do drive in the right lane and forget/ignore their mirrors to see whats behind,i do drive in the right lane and constantly check mirrors all 3 to pull over and let others pass by if needed, how many cars have got interior mirrors arseways down on left and up on right when horizontal when adjusted correctly should see out of back windscreen.

Why would a car come up flashing lights behind him while he was over taking if he didn't move into the overtaking lane at a speed slower than they were going at?

if it was on a bend you might not see the other faster car due to obstructions, one reason why one checks mirrors all the time as your not the only lunatic on road + forgot to mention clean windows inside and out makes a big difference in safer driving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭scamalert

check your rear lights again-to make sure break and other lights are working fine.

Otherwise only reason would be if you were hogging the lane while others wanted to pass, since others might be incoming at say 150 or more, thus you sitting on right lane would piss them off thus flashing.

Specially if motorway is half empty and your sticking to the limit, while many travel on outside lane specially if traffic is clogged up miles ahead thus some people stay until they pass them instead of going in and out, thus you sticking to rules are getting harassed by others who want to get by faster.
But even in such cases most usually would flash once to get your attention and move-unless you are totally unaware and doing it for miles.

I donation of motorway driving, almost all of it in the left lane. Often though, when overtaking a line of lorries or slower cars, you'll have a car right up your backside leaving zero braking distance.

My point is, no matter what speed you do, and I can assure you that I'm no slouch on the motorway, you'll always have some idiot behind you.

The test is just a measure of your ability to control a piece of machinery, not your ability to drive.

From what im reading the op was more than likely right. He was overtaking a car at the speedlimit. .
A car going 30 percent over the speedlimit came up behind him and saw a fiat panda and got browned off cause he had to drop speed and it was a panda which are normally slow cars. .
Regarding cars overreading and this being an excuse to drive faster for the other car . All cars overread so the speedos would probably read the same more or less.

The point being that if you're driving down a road with an indicated 120km/h on your speedo you are travelling possibly 10km/h less than the limit. That's fine if you want to travel at ~10% less than the limit but on most roads I like to drive to the limit so I'll drive at 120km/h regardless of what my speedo tells me.

How do you verify the speed you are doing is correct.verified by gps ?
I assume you just do 130 on the clock.
Did you know there is a 4 or 5 k difference in speed at 120 from having new tyres and nearly worn out tyres.
Do you also account for that.

I've had people flash me because I was overtaking at 125 kph a few cars that were doing 110 or so. They came up behind me while I was overtaking - I didn't swing out in front of them dangerously at all. The reason they flashed was because they wanted to continue on at 150 or whatever excessive speed they were doing. Was I going to go up to that speed to satisfy their stupid urges? No. I was doing 5 over the limit myself and continued at that speed until I had overtaken the cars as I originally set out to. I then moved back into the left lane and let the douchebag behind me continue on his way.

The point is - if you're speeding you can't excpect other people to do the same just because you feel slightly inconvenienced.

Picture this. We have all been in the situation where we are in the RH lane, there are two cars in the LH lane 500m ahead. You get within 50m and the the rearmost car decides to pull out and overtake. That's no problem at all, however it's the pull out and overtake at .00000001 km/h more than the car in front manouvre that they are executing. Not the end of the world you may argue, and they are entitled to overtake so you be patient and resist the temptation to flash your lights and beep your horn. And then they pass the car they are overtaking and you ready yourself to continue your journey only to find that they need another 10 km to pull into the LH lane. By this time the bus you overtook 10 km ago is right behind you.

Not saying that's what happened to the OP but it might not be far off the mark. :)
