question for anyone who can answer if possible, have a MK3 Mondeo the 01-07 model for many months now i'd had a rattle to the right offside of it when I go over bumps, potholes etc,i changed the shocks thinking this was the issue but it isn't sadly as the problem is still there,it did however pass the nct with this issue, any suggestions as to what it may be?thanks in advance :)

Handbrake cable maybe? Known issue to come loose and make noise on those models apparently.

Handbrake was tightened for the nct and she passed, this noise was there before it,i'm literally baffled at whatever it is  had someone sit in the back whilst I drove it and it rattles going over potholes only on one side,i'm not mechanically minded I just hope it's a cheap fix :(

Is it the front or rear, you just say right off side. If it's the rear it could be the subframe bushes, over time they wear and can cause noise.

apologies,it is the right rear, are subframe bushes a big job?would a car get through the test with those?

Anti roll bar links more than likely.

I also have a Mondeo and have always had a knocking sound from the rear when going over humps or ramps. Its more noticeable if there are people in the back seats. I always believed it was the anti roll bar links or bushes. Got both these replaced and passed an Nct recently but the knocking is still there. I have learned to live with it but would love to know what it is...

I'd bet on it been a drop link.

Sub frame bushings. Awkward enough to do in the wrong hands, get a guy who's done a few and he'll fly it. Don't leave them too long or they'll wear the sub frame and the new bushes won't be a proper interferes fit.

It could be the handbrake cable, they sometimes come out of their clips so will knock.
It's probably the drop link or arb bushing.
I posted a video a while back with a similar problem, will try and find it.

Pull your exhaust towards you and see if you can hear knocking, the rubber might look ok but can perish and expand so a bit more play.

could a car that had this problem before the nct actually pass it?mine did and the noise is still there,i've had the issue for months now,but it does sound like it is coming around the top shock mount as I did back up onto a ramp on that side one time, but when the shocks were replaced the mechanic said nothing about it,i do think I might need a change of mechanic though as I have noticed in the few times I have went he never has a lot of customers, the most is 3/4.

Yes it could still pass NCT , mine did anyway.
You can get under and have a look at the suspension components and use a pry bar to move them to see if it creates the noise.

If your not confident of doing it yourself get your mechanic to drive the car over ramps or small potholes so he can hear it himself and should be able to find the problem.

Don't mind the tinny rattle, that was just my heatshield.

You can hear knocking/clunks throughout video.

If you you don't have a spare camera to strap under the car buy a big cable tie and stick your mechanic under it :D

I like your thinking :D will watch the video there now, take a trip to the mechanic and come back to you once I get his advice :)

I had a 2006 Mondeo, and the car would rattle in the rear when going over bumps, like you I was told it was bushings etc but it was the handbrake cable.

You said you had it tightened, but that won't stop it rattling. I couldn't believe the noise it was making.

Very easy to fix. All you need is a few cable ties. The cable is down each side of the car under the back door area. Just lie under the car at the sides. the cable is there, tighten it with a cable tie.

Sold the car to a mate about 2 months ago, he said 2 weeks ago that there was a noise in the back, I tightened the cable and voila, it was gone.

So try that first. If it's not that then it's possible it's a droplink.

Usually you can't tighten the cables, both need to be replaced but your're right about them knocking.
They come off there mounting points which causes them to knock. There fairly thick and heavy but do have a rubber bush so need to make sure everything is secure.

I'll get a pic later on of my one that came off
