    T'was born out of US culture and has transmitted to a thankfully small degree from there. The US young man, or at least a vocal enough number of them, seem to be quite adrift in that culture. A culture that was always a mix of confused extremes and contrasts. It's both a very macho culture and a feminised one and enough men appear to be stuck in "we're not sure who we are and what our role is anymore". Some men have picked a "side" and are fearful of giving off even the slightest whiff of the "other" to their peers and the "no homo" thing is a symptom of that. Back when that film 300 came out, a homoerotic spectacle of oiled up man muscle and a flic gayer than George Michael's underpants, :D there was all sorts of confusion going on over on US forums. It was all gung ho, booyah! Hell yes! This is Sparta! stuff, with an undercurrent of "oh god, please don't let me catch the gay" while sharing pics of each others pecs and biceps. All terribly odd. I mean you're either gay or you're not, big whoop. *shrugs*
