Looking at replacing our second car. Budget is 7k. Around 150 miles a week to work. Diesel, saloon and maybe 1.8 engine. Low tax. Any ideas would be appreciated.

What's your current second car? Might give people an idea what to recommend as 7k buys a wide spectrum of cars. Also 150 miles per week is fairly low, does it have to be a diesel car other than just for cheap tax?

Saloon will restrict your choices somewhat, would you consider a 5 door hatchback too?

2003 Honda CRV. The better half currently drives it to work and heavy on juice. Also wants lower tax. Saloon, family car is her preferred choice.

Honda Civic saloon seems like an obvious choice:

Tax on them is €570, 1.8 is good for 40mpg and they are very reliable.

Don't think your mileage really warrants a diesel and most within your price range will have hefty mileage on them.

Was gonna suggest one too bazz. Not much of a tax saving, but they're deffo economical and reliable as the day is long.

I'm averaging 43mpg in mine despite spirited driving.
