Pretty dangerous low flying by 2 mil-24 in Syria. I cant help but feel that with all those rounds going up that they will lose a few helis before too long.

The Mil 24s are very robust but at that height they are really vulnerable to ground fire.

The pilots must have balls of steel.

Don't know much about the aircraft. But judging from the video, I'd say Jihadi Joe filled his fcuking pants when he seen those two looping around his gaff  .

Looks like lessons from there time in Afghanistan have been forgotten give it a few weeks and we'll start seeing hinds drop like flies

The Hind is proof against pretty much anything up to 20mm cannon and they probably have intelligence from the Syrian army as to whether the opposition have shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles.

Some more footage, the first bit where they're doing a bomb run is pretty interesting

Is it just me or would shouting instructions in how to combat the threat be more effective than shouting God is Great over and over again!!!

Balls of steel from the pilots though!

any 23mm or even 14.5 will get it down easily.
AFAK rebels already downed 1 or 2, plus a MIG.
I don't count anymore MI downed in Iraq or Apaches in Yemen...

Run, no seriously i think if a hind or apache appears is it not better you thank all the gods that's it's shooting at your friends and not you,

That's what made isis different in some areas they acting as cohesive well versed units and left the Allah chants till after taking an objective,

It will be interesting if isis can hit back against the Russians or if they have the equipment to do so after 8000 + airstrikes against them.

Russians and IS do not have any interest to fight each others.
They share the same project, ie partition of Syria...

You could say the same for all parties involved in the conflict then!

Are those chafs being deployed from the helicopters? If so then they must believe SAMs are in operation.

Yeah there chaff ,possibly or they learned lessons from their adventures in Afghanistan in the 70's and 80's they lost around 70+ to mostly stingers if I'm correct

Pretty sure it's SOP for any low flying aircraft engaging in CAS.

They are flares. The idea being that heat-seeking missiles lock on to the heat signature of the flare rather than the helicopter engine. Chaff is used against radar guided missiles but these aren't fitted on Mi-24's and that type of missile isn't used by Manpads anyway so it wouldn't be any good anyway.

"Easily" is a relative term. The aircraft may not be immune to the rounds, but you'd better hope you kill it before it figures out where you are.

In the first few seconds of the video the helicopters are firing off what looks to be a thousand mini missiles. What are these?

57mm rockets. They usually carry 4 pods of 32. They can fire them singly, in volleys or all at once.

It looks like they're shooting them into the air though. Not hitting the ground. Or are they?

    From the wiki:

their effectiveness was considered poor. Pilots described the rockets fanning out after launch "like a tulip", and that the warhead was only good for "tickling the dookhi's (mujahedeen) heels".

The effect on the ground is that it gets heads down, and the noise is unmistakable. When you hear ordinance leave an AH, you'd know how spooky it is. Even if it's 3 miles away, firing away from you, it sounds like its coming for you.

No, rebels aka free syrian army do not want syria's partition.

Your post mentioned only Russia and ISIS as wanting it.

You left out a lot of other parties in the conflict.

ISIS don't want it though. They want control of the whole lot of Syria and a lot more.

IS knows they can only control sunni-dominated areas, they know they struggle in other areas, can't take them at all, in syria or iraq.

I didnt say that only RUssia and IS want syria's partition, I was answering a post speaking about Russia fighting IS...

Mi-28 Havoc's have now been spotted in Syria. Better night time capability I believe, and a dedicated attack helicopter unlike the Mi-24 attack come troop transport.

Other way around, really. Mi-24 was based off the Mi-8, similar to the way the AH-1 was based off the HU-1.

More Russian stuff from Damascus, taken from a drone.

I know that the computer game nature of the coverage is pretty disturbing, but it's still an incredible video

more action from a few days ago. Plenty of "Aloha Snackbar"

So, it seems that Assad's opposition forces don't have a MANPAD between them?

Its quite remarkable that Russian helicopters can operate so low & slow with absolute impunity.

less 'Admiral Akbars' and more AA weapons seems the obvious tip.

New air defence units to combat mil 24s.

    Evidently they didn't!

coz they can find manpads or AA anywhere, but they just prefer their kids to be barrel bombed and killed everyday...
