Means test for jobseekers allowance

Recently my partner and I have both become unemployed. We are not eligible for Jobseekers Benefit and are looking into Jobseekers Allowance. We've read through all the info on the Citizen Information and Social Welfare sites but are still not clear on the following things:

    1) We are renting and don't own a home. We do though consequently have joint savings over 20k. The question is, will the means test be done separately for each of us based on half the total amount (good) or might it be done for just one of us based on the full amount (not so good!). There seems to be some ambiguity on this on the websites.

    2) One of us also has a pension fund from an old job (private sector). If we're nowhere near retirement age, are we right in assuming that this is not relevant to the means test? We can't find the pension documents at mo and couldn't tell you what it's worth today, but I always assumed that you can't access pension funds until you retire? Some info on the Welfare site is starting to make me second-guess myself here - might I be wrong?

Thanks for reading and appreciate any help!
