Quite an intense display near the northern horizon in Achill during the past hour. Not too many high streamers, but a lot of activity within the band of light itself. Seems to have died down now.

I was out for a walk about half an hour ago and thought I was imagining faint pillars of light to the north. Obviously not! :-)
I'm between Nenagh and Thurles by the way.

Amazing view in Naas earlier. Ive never seen anything like it. It was North Pole stuff just not overhead. Very chuffed to have seen it to be honest!

Went to Kippure and Sally Gap this evening looking for it, hoping the Dublin light pollution would be a bit removed, but didn't see anything.

Just wondering if anyone here can give me a guide on how to picture the aurora. Was out tonight with my Canon EOS 300D at the auroral peak. Was watching the aurora trying to take photos but the camera would not even try to take a shot as all the settings were wrong I assume. I tried on my smartphone (Samsung S6) but these all came out black. PS I am a novice on camera setup.

So for those of us in Dublin, where would be good spots to go to try to spot the aurora with the least light pollution? I saw someone mention Hollywood Great near Naul before.

One of mine from up near the airport last night (10-11.30pm)

    The R121 to be exact.

It was actually alot stronger at around half 9 though when i could see it from my attic here in Finglas.

    Great picture.

So I probably did see it when I looked out at 11 or so near athenry
I saw a few of the higher bits poking above the clouds briefly but since no body had pictures from after 9:30, I assumed I must have been imagining things!

Anyone know the prospects for tonight?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

    Short timelapse

Looks likely again tonight but dunno if it will reach the strength it did last night for so much of the country to see it. Also more cloud moving in later.

services.swpc.noaa.gov/images/aurora-forecast-northern-hemisphere.png Hmm, get in the car or stay where I am, kp5 predicted and supposed to be most chance of seeing it around midnight. Been watching the above for the last hour or so and the view line has been creeping slowly southward.

Aurora alerts Ireland tweeted this yesterday:

    First 24 hours, 7Kp possible.

    Final 24 hours, 6Kp possible.

When does the Aurora storm watch begin?

The storm watch begins on 02/11/2015 at 00:00:00 -- in 16 hours and 40 minutes (this info is automatically in your local time)

The storm watch starts at the above time and continues for 48 hours.

How far south is it likely to go?

You should try the Aurora notifier app it's free and pretty cool too.I can't post a link but it's in the Google play store anyway.

Depends on the strength, kp 7 is a good indication that it would get down as far as Dublin at least. Fingers crossed for clear skies.

Got a tweet earlier, looks like the storm might be delayed. Talk of northern lights spotting starting at midnight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,139 ✭✭✭John mac

latest looks like it will be best between 21:00 and 00:00 this evening and then kp6 between midnight and 3

    kp 0.33 at the moment.

Don't think anything interesting to look at tonight. :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 119 ✭✭ComaWhite

It's forecasting a kp7 (G3) tomorrow between 1500 and 1800. Twas nearly pitch black here in Donegal at six this evening, so maybe we'll catch a glimpse of something if we're lucky and the weather hold. Perfect conditions tonight though, ragin' I am! :/

Storm is starting now. kP 4 at the moment.

Am hoping the forecast will be a few hours late today until dark (plus hope the rain stays off too) - probably too much to hope for!

Maybe too much (in terms of weather), but comparing aurora forecast to real data - it really looks it's delayed, approx 3 hours. Fingers crossed. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,703 ✭✭✭✭fits

Still no sign of it. I'm in Finland now and the sky is clear but this storm looks like a lame duck. Only moderate activity earlier this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,703 ✭✭✭✭fits

seems to be picking up now. but still not storm level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

You need the BZ component to turn south for a good display. Best of luck !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭sunbeam

Clear skies but nothing here so far in Achill. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,703 ✭✭✭✭fits

beginning to storm. Getting much stronger in last half hour. A bank of cloud passing over here so cant see anything yet. Not quite there yet for viewing from Ireland methinks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,703 ✭✭✭✭fits

The sky is green. Very strong.
