Rent a car without a credit card?

Is there a way to rent a car without a credit card?
I am just 3 months here in Ireland, so I do not have a credit card, just a debit one. So they refuse to give me a car.
I even had a friend of mine, who offered to give his card (we were in the Budget office in person), and they said it cannot be done, since the person with the card had to be in person there on the pickup date.

Is there any other company more flexible, so we can get a car?

Try a different company, I have rented with a Visa Debit before, but had to pay a hefty deposit. I think it was hertz.

No problem for a hefty deposit, I proposed that, but did not accepted it.

yup, also heard that either hertz or avis (cant remember which) were grand for debit card but you either had a gigantic deposit the size of the excess + fuel tank (so guts of 2 grand in cash out of your account+rental fee) or you paid the super insurance which then reduced the excess to a normal amount

why someone with over 2 grand in their account doesnt have a credit card baffles me, but anyhow.

If you consistently have more than 2 grand in the bank, a debit card should be fine for most things. Only reason I have a credit card is you don't pay per-transaction like one has to with a debit card.

I dont have a credit card either - enterprise take debit cards and are really good to deal with.

I used indigo car hire last year and hired with avis. hired a car in france for 5 days. was told they would take €800 or €900 deposit on debit card but they only took about €400 plus the actual fee and the €400 came off after 3 days.

Indigo provides a service with a debit card, as long as the numbers are embosed, however you can only pickup/dropoff from/to airports.

    Enterprise does not.
Waiting for answers from Dooley's and Hertz.
