Volvo s40 fault code

    Hi everyone,
Im currently driving a 2005 1.8 petrol s40 and am getting it ready for sale.
Ive owned it for about 2 years and after a year I noticed a fault light coming on the dash. I brought it to a garage and they ran a diagnostic and told me there was nothing coming up and that it could be a sensor that needed cleaning.
I spent the next year with the same light reappearing pretty randomly but never had a problem with any aspect of the car.
In selling the car, I would rather not have a warning light on the dash and brought it back to be checked. The diagnostic revealed - D900 : CONTROL MODULE COMMUNICATION. FAULTY COMMUNICATION
The garage have told me that this is a rather vague message and that to find the fault could be a long and expensive process, even if it is only a case of a warped connection or a faulty wire.
It is very frustrating because the car appears to be in very good condition but I am not comfortable selling it with under false pretenses.
Does anyone have any experience of this code or any light at all to shed on this ?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Have a look at the passenger footwell, the fusebox and control module located there can get a kick. A quick search shows that D900 means "non specific CAN communications error". They're right, it could be long and complicated to fix. However, if it was another control module in the car (The S40 has like 35 modules or something), the ECU should be able to determine which one it is by its identifier. Non specific identifier would sway me towards the ECU or some main wiring being at fault.

Any intermittent performance issues with the car? Slow acceleration every now and again?

Alternator is a weak spot on those cars - gave up on our 05 V50 1.8 after putting a warning light up on and off for a few weeks, coupled with being a bit hesitant under acceleration.

Eventually just goes and that's really when you find out it is the alternator at fault - make sure you have breakdown assist in case it happens.
