Ah you're not so confused, you're spot on. Eir Fibre Extreme is indeed FTTH up to 1000MB/s and Eir Fibre is FTTC up to 100MB/s. If you take at fibrerollout(dot)ie/where-and-when/ you'll see a pile of blue lines, they're the proposed FTTH fibre optics that are going to be put to use within the next few years. FTTH is still a long way away for most of us but it's on the way.

Maybe the "Forum Charter & Broadband FAQ" should be updated with info on FTTC/FTTH information?

Its all very confusing. My exchange is Carlingford which is due to be upgraded to efibre in the new year according to the eir site. Currently im lucky to get over 2mb download as im about 4k from the village. Will I notice any increase in speed? I dont care about 100mb any improvement is better than nothing.

The eir rural fibre map shows the blue lines coming down my lane to about 250m away from my house in one direction and about 500m in the other. Essentially im in the middle of a gap. There appears to be a green cabinet at the end of the lane about 500m away.

When I register my interest with eir im "congratulated" that im in a planned efibre area but considering im so far from the exchange is it going to be futile?

Looking at the maps (open-eir and Ireland Offline) Carlingford appears to be a NGN fibred exchange but ADSL1 enabled. My brother is a similar distance from our local exchange (4Km) but ADSL2 enabled, his modem syncs at about 7Mbps but unfortunately the exchange is non-NGN (radio backhaul/no fibre/congested) so the speed drops right off in the evenings/weekends.

If they upgrade your exchange to ADSL2 you should see an improvement in speed. At 4Km efibre will make no difference to you, max distance from a cabinet with vectoring is 2Km and max distance from an exchange is about 1.7Km I believe.

Regarding the green cabinet about 500m away, does it appear on open-eir's NGA Fibre Broadband Network coverage map? Might explain why you're in a planned efibre area.

As regards the FTTH blue lines, they may be subject to change, only in the early planning stage yet. They may or may not be extended to your location, directly by eir or via the NBP between 2017 and 2020.

Looks like they've no plans for FTTC from that copper cab. Not all cabs get it. FTTH, 2020

Turns out that the map has been changed and a cabinet (CF01_001) is being upgraded thats 950m from my house. Eir said today that I should be good from this cabinet but couldn't confirm until it launches, which at the minute looks like mid 2016.

In peoples experience are these launch dates conservative? is there any way of tracking it?

Also is there anything about my line that would stop me getting the full speeds when efibre launches?..its a 3mb line.

You'll get 30Mb+ at that distance, certainly not 100Mb.

Dates are estimates, theirs a lot of paperwork and real work that can throw times. Keep an eye on the map for "build commenced" status.

Thank you..30MB+ id be happy with (for now) given the crap service ive had for years.

Is the reason i'm only on a 3mb line now due to the fact i'm about 4km from the exchange?

Yep. You'd be on 24Mb if you lived on the main street in town.
