I have a car here sitting in the driveway which has been recently nctd and insured today. But I can't get it taxed because I didn't declare it off the road for over a year. How do I go about getting it taxed

You have to pay penalty back tax for the year you didn't declare it off the road. What tax band is it in?

Change of ownership - 'sell it' to a family member and then 'buy' it back off them - tax it from the date of ownership change.

I'm unsure what tax band is as I'm new to driving but the tax is 199py. If I pay the back tax would everything be good to gi ?

Yes you just indicate the time that the last tax expired on the tax renewal form (RF100A). For you the arrears should be €19.90 per month, so €238.80.

He doesn't have to pay penalty back tax - don't mislead OP.
He can - as advised - sell car to someone else and then buy it back to avoid a need to pay back tax.

I just got insured on the car today. How would I go about doing that

Sign it into somebody else's name (sell it to them) and then when you get the log book back, sign it back into your name (they sell it back to you).

He asked how he could go about getting it taxed. I didn't mislead him. Selling the car is a way of avoiding paying the tax which will work too.

Don't wade in here with your sarky comments after someone else has already suggested that he can sell the car.

Hi as others have stated you change ownership(sell) as especially in your case op you are not being dodgy at all by driving the car the last year with no tax.

You are only liable from month car is then re registered in your name.

eg. 22 October you would be liable from 1st of October.

Is there any way the intermediate purchaser could be found liable for car tax too?
Somehow see this "loophole" being closed off if it becomes widespread practice. Revenue not likely to ignore indefinitely.

    Simple answer is no.

Its a system that looks good on paper.

They will eventually follow over the water and then it will be very strict.

But for now no worries just sell and re purchase.

    You did.
    You said:

Which is not true, as he doesn't have to pay it if he decides to sell and buy the car again.

It is, but you first reply to OP suggests there isn't any other option like that.

Lol I didn't expect to be berated for providing an incomplete answer to a question on here. I would have thought that the point of asking a question on an open forum would be to get information from different posters and have a discussion about it, not for individuals posts to be over examined, picked at and slapped down? Though that seems to be your M.O. generally.

Can you explain how this works please? I've a motorbike that's bn garaged since 2008 in the Uk. I want to bring it back but they're saying I will have to pay years of arrears on it!!!

Well if its UK registered then you should be ok? You tax it from when you VRT it and register it here.

If it's a bike you brought over and now want to bring back, you "sell" it to someone on the logbook (fill in the section on the back), send it off to Shannon who will update the records and issue the log book to the "new owner".

They then repeat the above to sign it back to you.

Hope it's ok that I jump in here.
I've a car in my driveway which I had declared off the road when this came into force but let it slip and I think that expired in August.

If I don't have any intention of ever driving it again can I just ignore declaring it off the road until I sell it for scrap/trade-in within next few months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭pillphil

A long as it's not in a public place you should be fine. You'd obviously have to arrange for it to be moved for the trade-in.

Yeah it's sitting up for the last 7 years so whoever takes it will have to come get it themselves, I just need to find someone to hopefully give me something for it as parents want their driveway back😃
    Thanks for the quick reply.

I presume the bike is in the UK but still registered in Ireland ( at least that what you seem to be saying).
If that's the case, and you have the Log Book (VLC), just sell it to a family member/friend and then buy it back again as soon as they receive the VLC. You can then Tax it from the 1st of the month in which you recently bought it.

It's not a "loophole" per se. It's been that way ever since motor tax was introduced way back in the 1st half of the last century.....and has been used as a means of eliminating Back-Tax ever since, so I'd say it's pretty widespread anyway
