Digital Rights Ireland have won a case in the European Court against mass data retention by ISPs, telcos, software companies etc? Aside from the cost this imposes on service providers, it is also points to an “I can, so I will” creeping invasiveness by the (sometimes corrupt) government agencies and others who use access to these data to exercise power over law abiding citizens in Europe and elsewhere.

According to their website, they have to return to the High Court in Dublin to get the ECJ judgement implemented in Irish law, which hopefully will lead to it being copied into EU regulations in due course. Ireland is in a key location in Europe when it comes to traffic metadata – Google, Facebook, etc as well as Hibernia Networks and similar.

They have limited resources, and have made tremendous progress so far. Anyone with a few €€€ to spare might consider giving them a donation. Aside from the ECJ judgement, I suspect that there are many other data privacy issues that could benefit by them shining a torch on the issues.
