    just wondering how long an animal has to in your herd before you can move it on

    AFAIK there is no time limit on up to 100 cattle, any more than that you need to apply for a dealer license. It used to be different a few years ago and they had to be blooded in your own herd but it caused uproar and was changed back.

    From Dept site-
    A person who buys and resells within 30 days less than 100 cattle in any 12 month period will be excluded from the requirements to be approved as a dealer.
