Toyota Corolla judder

    Hi All,

So im driving down the motorway yesterday doing 120 -130 next thing i feel a judder as if the car is about to die so i start to slow down a bit then the car judders again so i prepare for the car to die on me but nothing happens so i continue to drive on and i get home about 20 mins later. Today i drove the car and seems fine.
Now i know this could be anything but i am just wondering does anyone have a suggestions as to what could have made the car do this. I don't want to be driving down the motorway again and the car does die on me.

Just to note that i can sometimes hear my timing chain rattle when i am accelerating between 3rd and 4th gear could this have something to do with it?

My car is a 01 Corolla 1.4 VVTI.

    Thanks in advance.

That doesn't sound to bad could probably buy something to clean that up maybe?

With regard to the rattling chain should i be worried about that?

    What mileage?

What oil level on a dipstick?

    EML recently appeared?

    110000 on the clock.

I put oil in it that day so was over half way.

EML came on the week before but brought it into the garage to get it sorted. They said it was a rear lamdba sensor and it was replaced on Wednesday.

This is the ECU resetting itself, the clocks drop to 0 and then they pick up again.
It was a known fault with these engines and there is a technical service bulletin about it somewhere but its a long time ago.
We have one and it used to do this, I don't drive it much anymore but I remember it doing it on occasion.
The timing chain rattle could be the intake rattling, there is another chamber inside that comes loose, these do give trouble but its not a problem just a noise.

So if its a known fault is it something that needs to be sorted?

No. it won't do any damage.
Just keep driving it and checking the oil.

    Sound thanks for that.
Would u recommend getting the rattle noise investigated? Is there a possibility that the chain is loose?

By all means get the chain checked, if services have been skimped the chain/tensioner could be worn.
But worth noting that this could be the issue.

The best for that engine is to be filled with oil to the "max" level on a dipstick. Use 5w30 A5/B5 oil.

And yes, intake manifold rattling happens sometimes, so check that first.

110 000 miles is nothing for the chain in them, so rather manifold or chain tensioner (or car is very clocked and made significantly more than odometer shows). ;)
