1st year NUIG accommodation

I have a place in NUIG for next year (2016) as I deferred my place this year so now I'm now starting to look into possible accommodation. I had a look at Corrib and I was so disappointed because I always said I'd go there in 1st year. The place was smelly and musty, dirty and just too small and basic. I completely understand that student accommodation is always very basic but I felt that for the price, this just is not worth it. Everyone recommends Corrib for 1st years but I think I might try Dunaras or some or those places instead. I do like going out and having a few drinks but I'm also very serious about my studies so the extent of my outings will probably be quite minimal. For that reason I don't want somewhere overly 'party-ish' but nothing too dry and serious either! haha 😜 any advice on what I should do?

Dunaras is a stretch for 1st year. Have you tried Dun na Coiribe/Gort/Cúirt? Quality is so much better than Corrib, although the good thing about Corrib is location and good-ish wifi compared to the others.

I'm going to keep looking around but I'd prefer to go somewhere with a few first years around and I've heard those places are pretty much all 2nd years and up. By a stretch do you mean in regards to the distance from the university?

I live in Kinlay hostel and it's full of first years, dunno what the study situation is like tbh, but id reccomend the nuig library for anything related to college, way too easy to get distracted anywhere else

Im exactly the same intend to study at NUIG next year but corrib village looks terrrible! most of the people from my school stay in Menlo or Cuirt/Gort na Coiribe so id say ill probably stay there in first year!

I was skeptical too but my friends seemed to like Corrib

Stay clear of Dunaras. Far too expensive considering the state of the place and the staff are the worst. Dampness and mould are issues too.

And the internet can be unreliable every so often. Pretty vital to student living.
