Disability Allowance and Paid College Work Placement

I am required to do a 6 month work placement as part of my degree (I'm in 3rd year and I'm on disability allowance). More than likely, this will be paid. I'm getting conflicting answers about how this works from social welfare - has anyone here done this before?
