I got arrested for shop lifting and am scared as to what will happen now. I called a lawyer but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. The items in question where less than 15E. I am a single mom. I was cooperative and admitted to it. My main worry is doing jail time and since I am american not being able to renew my visa which is up in January. I have been here a number of years with no prior records. I am hoping to get a suspended sentance and community service. But does anyone know what the usual punishment is? TIA

Likely you'll get a Garda caution (if you haven't got one already) and will be banned from the store. It's not worth the states time and money to bring someone to court for theft of items the price of a dinner.

I got cautioned before so i have a court date any everything now. i just don't want to lose my kids or do any jail time. I know that seems a bit thick as i'm the stupid one who did it.

Do the crime face the consequences as an adult you should have realised there was risk in what you were doing... Alas our criminal justice system is shockingly lax on crimes like this so youl get a slap on the wrist more than likely...I'm not too sure how it will impact your visa application but if you have to declare it will not look favorably

It's very unlikely you'll get a custodial sentence with a deportation order. A reasonably small fine will be more likely. As for visum renewal application success or failure only time will tell. Criminal activity will definitely play a part in the decision making but it's not the sole deciding factor.

You say you have no record, but then say you've already been cautioned in the past. Which is it?

Chances are you'll either make a donation to charity and no conviction, or pay a fine.

As to your visa status, it's entirely up to the person reviewing it. A conviction can cause issues, but there's no guarantee you'll even get a conviction.

If it were an Irish citizen and they received a conviction for it they would be banned from your country.....
