I am with permanet at moment (rural) evening/weekends best i can get is 1/2mb, vodafone rang me today and offered broadband for €38 a month up to 24mb ( Vodafone broadband via eircom phone line.)
haven't use the line in years, but vodafone said will put in new line and modem, would this be out of the frying pan into the fire, broadband through a old eircom line ?

Have Vodafone broadband thru the old twisted pair copper wire into my house. There was no phone in use here when we bought the house but the line into the house was intact.

Think the wire into the house is at least 20 years old. Just did a speed test and d/l is 31 MBS and upload is 14

I have Vodafone broadband through eircom lines in my house too. The house itself is over 100 years old, not sure how old the phone lines coming into it are but when I got it activated first 1.5 years ago I was getting 6mb. Then the local exchange switched to ADSL2+ and I was getting 15mb. Now the local exchange is fibre enabled and I'm getting 40mb down/ 10mb up consistently.

The only complaint I had was how long it takes to get set up in the beginning as I was using a 3g hotspot in the meantime. Took maybe 6 weeks from getting Eircom to activate the line, to vodafone putting through my order, setting up my account & having my service switched on.

If you have a phone number for your house or a house right next to you, then enter it here, it gives you a pretty accurate speed of what to expect: http://www2.digiweb.ie/BusinessLineChecker/default.aspx

Should be fine. They must have a finer line running near you.

Just make sure you get the best offer and if you have a Vodafone mobile ask about a discount for that. My bb should be 40 a month and I get 10 off because I have a Vodafone payg mobile.

Because there is no line they don't know exactly what speed they can provide, so they're quoting the max. How are are you from your local exchange(or your local post office)?

don't expect max speed ,just hoping might get better then 1/2mb in the evenings/weekends.

Do any neighbours have an active phone line? Ask for their number and put it into the eircom website, will tell you what you'll likely get.

Phone lines go 7-8km, at 5km broadband maxes out at around 1.5Mb.
