Phone can't be updated

I went to install an app only to get an error message. I then found out the app required 4.2, whereas my phone is stuck on 4.02.

It transpires no further updates are available, despite the specs of my phone being well capable of handling the latest android OS.

Wwhat a pile of ****e! Such a deliberate plot to force people to continue upgrading even when they don't need to.

Hence why things like the Moto phones became popular.

Sony xperia ray. It's a great phone and I love the size, but if all new apps won't work, it will start to become redundant.

I looked at that and was worried I'd fcuk up my phone if I made a mistake.

Is there always a way to revert back any changes?

You usually can save your current software.

I had one of them phones a few years back myself. Lovely little phone but in fairness they must be 5 year old and with the way technology is moving that is a long time!

Yes but all phones now are stupidly big! I can't find a phone I like that's decent quality under 4 fcuking inches.

What is wrong people? Are they overcompensating for being small elsewhere?

Horses for courses I suppose but the trend is for bigger phones as they can do so much more now. Practically removing the need for a PC.

Personally, I wont go below 5 inches. A 3.3 inch phone would wreck my head for everything like browsing, reading ebooks and watching Netflix.

If you don't want to try flashing custom roms onto the phone, your only other option is to upgrade but now most "small" phones are gimped in terms of specs.

Maybe have a look at the Sony Xperia M. I'm not sure if Sony are planning on releasing Marshmallow on it though.

Many of the xperia m's specs are below my xperia ray, and the OS can't be upgraded to 4.4.

That would be a total waste of cash tbf.

5 inches is a whopper to have in your hand, it just looks ridiculous.

Sony are actually one of the better OEMs at updating their phones - well since they eased back on the skin they put on Android and decoupled their apps into the Play Store.
Under Marshmallow, they are updating as far back as the Z1.

But, I would recommend putting on a third party ROM as someone suggested, though if memory serves me right, third party ROMs and Sony camera don't play well.

Either way, sounds like a second hand Z1 Compact is a possible phone, it's probably 2 years old so should be cheap to pick up. As it got lollipop, you should have little problems with apps for years to come.

Nice suggestion, it looks like a great phone.

Mind you, 300 euros is hardly cheap!

They are mainly used for media and web.

    Not as a phone.

We still use a phone with 2.3.6 as a backup phone, for just phone use. You can still load apps like viber and still use the web etc. It's just slow.

My phone works fine for media. I want something that fits neatly in my pocket and hand, not a giant monstrosity. People with big phones look like bellends tbh.

Z1 compact great lil phone but my god the screen is shocking I scratched it after 3 days and the screen itself smashed and another got hairline crack... Don't think I'd ever go Sony again in less they sort out screen problems...

Tbf, I always get a protective case, so that wouldn't be a problem.

It's just annoying it's over 4 inches. The 300 quid pricetag is also a bit steep.

I have the xperia z myself. Can't fault the screen at all but then I have a decent protector on it. Never had any problems with the phone in my pocket getting marked but when I had a galaxy I cracked 2 screens in my pocket.. I wouldn't buy one of them again!!

Op in fairness to the ray it's was a great phone and very tidy but times have changed. I was like you and didn't really want a bigger screen but now I honestly don't think I could go back to a smaller screen..

    You have 2 options.
    1. Update the version of Android on your current phone. I done it myself with my own ray and it was very easy.

    2. Upgrade your phone to a newer one and get another few years out of it until you run into the same problem again!!

I wouldn't say installing the customs roms is easy at all, and the results can be patchy.

I think I'll wait for the price of the z1 compact to drop before biting the bullet.

How many times have you installed a custom rom?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

Installing a ROM is very simple.

Your specs seem fairly crap op, a 1ghz Single core with 512mb ram are ancient specs

Apparently they fixed it in the Z2. I had the Z1 and the screen got so many scratches by just being in my pocket. My Galaxy S1 never got any scratches on the screen. Honestly don't like Sony devices much anyway. Had loads of other problems with the device too.

    Lovin' my G4 now though.

Depends on the device. Some are easier to mod than others. It's quite an ambitious thing for people not familiar with it and risks bricking the device.

It's easily enough to run 4.4.

I know you think you're a big man with your 6 inch 'phablet', but I can tell you that it makes you look like a tosser.

To be honest you sound like a tosser.. people here are only trying to help you and you insist on insulting them because they choose to use a phone with a big screen! Seriously dude get a grip.

I'm very grateful to those who have offered decent advice, but that poster decided to deride the specs of my phone when they are perfectly good enough to run 4.4.

It makes me feel strong to weild such a phone in my massive man hands, one with useable specs and  it runs 5.1.1 because of its useable specs

Regardless of you being a tool, I'd say try the custom ROM for 4.4.4, or else look into the Chinese android stores, you can always find small phones with middling specs there

As many times as you've had sexual intercourse.

All jokes aside, I'll give the update a go and see how it goes.

    What people like is subjective.

Most people would not be happy with a single CPU 3" screen, 512mb ram and 1GB internal disk with Android. They would find it very slow. It would well below the minimum specs for the OS.
Even when new the Ray was one of the smallest smart phones you could get. But there no need to offensive about it.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 48 Jack GrEnglish

It's 3.THREE inches. Jaysus, you can't even get that right.

For my needs the ray is perfect, it's a masterpiece compared to other smartphones I've owned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

    If its perfect, stop complaining.

    You have three choices
Get an iPhone 4S or older
    Try the KK ROM
Get a ****ty little android again.

And the end of each path you should stop whining because manufacturers won't cater to your needs as a special snowflake, and then get over it. If you want to go against the grain you've to make sacrifices.

Op you are completely deluded. I wouldn't even waste my time with custom roms on that, waste of time. But something more up to date, a moto e would nearly beat the ray at this stage.

It's too forking big! You'd know that if you'd bothered to read the thread.

4.5 inches is the maximum I'll consider and even that's too big really.

First gen moto e has a 4.3 inch screen, 2nd gen has 4.5inch screen.

Can you go any lower than 4.3 inches? I'd accept 4.

There is this. Has a 4 inch screen but it would be a step down in specs for almost the same price as the moto e

Well its has 4.4.2 (with an upgrade to lolipop planned) which is what you wanted. I don't know how important everything else is to you. I don't think you'll get a decent spec 4". Moto e is probably your best bet.

I hate the design of the moto 3 tbh, it's a fat bitch of a yoke, and the specs aren't even that grate on the first gen version.

Fack it, I'll wait for the Z1 compact to drop to 200 quid or so and upgrade then.
