Spending a few days in each city over Christmas. Five of us ages 15 to 65... what are we in for? :)

Beijing and Xian are really nice. Plenty to do in both places as well as good food and pubs.

Shanghai is expensive, nice to see but not much different to any big city in Asia.

I would suggest a day in Suzhou, about 30 mins on bullet train from Shanghai. It was described as the Venice of the East and an area of the city called Ping Jiang Lu on the banks of the canals is very nice.

You're facing pollution like you've never experienced...not to mention it will be cold.
