Entitlement to proceeds from sale of property inherited

So lets say two brothers inherited a property from their father, who passed last year. The property badly needed renovation. The brothers live with their mother and her boyfriend. The mother, who is the ex-wife of the bothers father, received only a sum of money from the will.

The two brothers didn't bother renovating the property so the mother and boyfriend decided to do the work themselves. The two brothers agreed that they could help renovating the property.

Now they're demanding that the proceeds from the sale are split between the mother and the sons whereas the two brothers want to pay simply for the work done.

From my understanding the mother has no legal right to proceeds from the sale but she is stating that a verbal agreement took place prior to the renovations that the profit would be split.

    Would that be correct?

They need to sit down and sort it out with maybe a neutral 3rd party or I know who'll be getting the proceeds. Mr/s solicitor.
