    picking up new car

When taking delivery of new car , before signing , paying up

would it be advisable to reserve time and go through own checklist
such as check all interior / exterior , engine bay, engine , all controls lights , gauges fluids , tires etc

or should you just trust the garage ?

do you get to test drive before paying up ?

ive heard various answers from people , some say ah garage and warranty take care of it , but i dont feel like driving away only to find fault round the corner or few days later ?

If you have any extras check that they are all installed.

Check all the panels for marks or defects - it will be a lot harder to prove it was already there when you leave the garage. Same with the wheels. New cars can and are damaged in transport.

It's no harm to pop the bonnet and give it a once over and checking that the spare wheel and associated bits are all in the boot.

Finally check all the documentation matches the car. Any time I've bought a car they usher you to sign and pay before seeing it. Just mention that you want to give the car a once over first.

First thing I do is stop and check the tyre pressures. They've never, ever been set correctly and uniformly.

I was in the supermarket carpark the other night and saw a man in a 152 car with a flat.Turns out that there was no jack in the car!(Spare wheel though)
    So check the boot.

I had no washer fluid in my new car. Got caught out with the low sun and smeared it all and couldn't see anything!
Give it a quick check before driving off.

You'l always hear horror stories from someone.

Personally the only reason I would check is if you spec'd some non standard extras and you want to make sure they are there before you seal the deal and accept the car. Even at that rate i'd have a quick check around it myself quietly or ask to be given a tour around it, try not to do it in an "I don't trust you" kind of way.

To be fair, any legit dealer does a pre delivery inspection before they give the car to you to cover their own ass and to ensure your satisfaction where they check the car mechanically and visually to make sure everything is ok.

That'd do me tbh, there's no real need to test drive it, the warranty allows you to dispute pretty much any failure.

I'd just check that the car I the same spec as you ordered. Wheel designs, tyre sizes can change.
Make sure it has the extras you wanted, and if there isn't manufacturers mats in there - make sure they're included!

One new car I bought, I opened the bonnet and found the fuse box cover resting on top of the air filter. Lucky I had not left the yard !

Another one, the back number plate was so loose it would never have made it home..

Another one I had asked for the model with the electric sunroof and leather - car had no leather. Dealer retro fitted the leather and then I paid and took the car.

Last car I had the wrong plates finished, only realized when I went to tax a couple of weeks later that the reg belonged to a ford transit

I'd make sure that all standard equipment was there and all extras are actually on the car. There's usually a set of codes on the service book which you can look up.

This advice is from someone who ordered a Golf in satin silver with climate control and had a Golf in the wrong silver without climate control delivered to him on the transporter at work!

(in the end I accepted the car in return for a partial refund)

It's much easier to get issues rectified when the money is still in your hands, once the garage has the money they have you so don't have as much pressure to resolve issues quickly. Give it a through inspection and get everything as you want it, even simple issues will require you taking time to resolve, before you hand over the money and drive off the yard.
