2l petrol X Trail?! Or a NA Forester

    Hi folks,

Posted some months back about needing new wheels with a high seating position and got some great advice.

Sat in lots of cars since then and have managed to rule out most mpvs.

I was impressed with the C Max though but I don't really like the actual car as such.

I've narrowed my search down to the x trail and the forester. Budget wise I could stretch to 6k but I couldn't care less what year I buy etc so would be much happier around the 4k mark.

I've accepted that I'll be in the high tax bracket and I'm coming to terms with the prospect of low mpg. I only do between 6 and 8 thousand miles a year so I can suck it up I guess.

Any thoughts on the 2l petrol X - trail vs 2l Forester X?

    Thanks.

First of all do you need 4wd, will you be going off road? The Forester is full 4wd whereas the X-Trail is available as a 2wd or 4wd. This makes a difference to the weight of the vehicle which in turn influences fuel economy. The 4wd drive train adds weight so less mpg.

If you don't need a 4x4 then look at the Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4, both are better built than the X-Trail and probably more fuel efficient too. None would have the off road ability of a Forester though.

@bazz26 I forgot to mention that I have no need at all for 4wd hence I ended up considering the 2wd petrol x trail. I then thought to myself if I am considering a 2l petrol I might as well look at a forester ☺

    I'm going round in circles.

The C Max is the sensible option but it's just so very very dull.

Is there 2wd CRV by any chance?

Good choices, All (X-Trail, Forester, RAV-4, CRV) are nice to drive and all are super reliable. Rav-4 and Forester are even quite sporty...to boot

My advice : Better to go for 4wd versions as these kinds of vehicles (SUV) can be skittish enough on wet roads etc. with just 2wd.
Also come resale time .. 4WD will be a valuable option.

I'm not certain, but I think the Forester is the only one with permanent 4wd...the others only have a kind of automatic 4wd, if the driven wheels (fronts) start to skid.

    PS. Also consider Suzuki Vitara
