Mileage on it really isn't much less than the Scenic he has now. Advert says it's also on the old tax system so over €500 per year. So really what I'm getting at is it really worth spending 6k to swap a 9 year old car on the old tax system for a similar one 2 years younger?

Thanks, I have advised him to look about the diesel version. Have pointed him towards this one (although a lower spec):

He likes the elevated driving position so are there any other cars that might fit the bill for similar money?

Look at seat altea, Citroen c3 Picasso.
You'll pay a premium for a Qashqai and your budget won't get you much in one.

we bought one a couple of years ago ( diesel version) so I'm just talk about General stuff.

    1) three internal door handles have broken. Two rear and one front.
    2) gearbox is very loose
    3) seat belts in the back have periodically stopped working (we have three kids though)
    4) driver seat has caused back issues with my wife, I find it has little support too
    5) rear brakes seizing (this could have been the mechanics fault)

We've had a number of costly issues with the engine that would put us off buying a qashqai again. But surprisingly other owners haven't had the same issue s as us and are happy.

Best of luck with whatever you go with
