99 corolla handbrake cable rusted

    Hi,
over the past few weeks I've noticed a squeaking or creaking noise coming from the rear drivers side of my 99 corolla when taking off and sometimes going over bumps. Had it with the mechanic tonight. He had a look and found that the handbrake cable is rusted and isn't going off properly making the wheel very stiff even when the brakes down.

He said that the area around the cable on both rear wheels is fairly badly rusted and said that if he goes to change the cable alot of the stuff around it will probably break off too. He also said the shock is a bit dodgy but that he wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Obviously I don't know a whole lot about cars so I'm just wondering what kind of other parts would be around the handbrake cable and if, as he says, worst case scenario it was to break what kind of price would it be to replace both sides or what parts could be required. Just trying to get an idea of the worst case scenario price.
Hopefully someone will help me out

    Thanks
