What to do, pay fine or go to jail?

Someone posted about this topic in After Hours and it has me wondering.

They claim that they owe money due to motoring fines but don't want to pay it. They want to do the jail time instead as they reckon they won't be long in jail.

    My questions are:

He was convicted for motoring offences. Is there another conviction for not paying the motoring offences fine or is it just jail in lieu of paying the fine?

If someone goes to jail for not paying that motoring conviction fine, does a background check show up that they went to jail for not paying the fine or does it just show up the original motoring conviction?

    Just curious.

Jail in lieu of the fine

Depends on the kind of check but generally only charges and convictions would appear.

How much money is it worth to avoid a cavity search?

In many cases fine defaulters are not processed as prisoners at all. They are not even given temporary release. They are simply turned away after arrival at the prison with the fine written off. It is far too much bother for the prisons to deal with short term inmates (less than 3 months). The prison authorities view is that the fine should be taken from social welfare or added to the persons tax bill.

This is the line I heard from an Irish Solicitor.
