What common, everyday foods do you avoid?

Mushrooms are right at the top of my list.

I've tried. Oh how I have tried, but I just can't force myself to even find them mildly acceptable. I think its the texture of them, even more so than the taste.

To a much lesser extent, I don't get how people can eat those cereal bars like the Rice Krispies one. They taste horrific to me.

Mayonnaise. I can barely look at it.

Agree OP - Mushrooms can fnck right off

Not a fan of Bananas either, but they are easily avoidable

They used to be sidekick to the mushrooms on my list, but I don't mind them so much now if they're diced up.

Can't be having the larger, barely cooked types around though, and I'll pretty much never add them to a meal myself if I'm the one cooking.

I'll support you campaign should ever wage war against them, however.
Enough of the mushroom hate, they are delicious!

    This one not so much.

    Meat and fish.
Happy enough to eat almost all fruit, veg and fungi.

Is it because of regular vegetarian principles, or just simply a taste thing?

Would be quite interested in finding out if people are known to do so because of the latter.

Raw tomato, vile bags of metalic tasting slime full of pips that serve no purpose other then to make sandwiches soggy.
    Disgusting.

i won't eat mushrooms, hate them. sent back a lasagna a few years ago that had mushrooms in through it.

i'll actively avoid onions, although I'll eat something with them if I have to. slimey on the outside, crunchy on the inside, yuck. i quite like crispy/fried onions though.

i used to avoid tomatoes (despite loving tomato flavoured/based things), but don't mind them really now. wouldn't choose to have them with anything though.

Started as the former, then became the latter.
I know a good few people who have always disliked the taste and/or texture of meat and fish, though. I'd say I know more of these than I would know vegetarians who avoid meat out of animal welfare concerns.

There's a part of me that feels like vegetarianism is like the next stage of evolution for mankind. As in, if we discovered life on another planet and it looked like a cow or a pig, or anything else, there would be uproar if we instantly slaughtered and ate it.

Perhaps its but a matter of time, albeit a long, long time, before its the general consensus on Earth.

Still though, I can't see myself changing over. Hypocritical, I know.

    Anyway, back to mushrooms.

Fish, beef, anything cinnamon scented or flavoured
Mushrooms are the best. Probably my most favourite food

    Mushrooms are wrank,
I can’t eat anything from the sea either, the smell is disgusting and the meat looks grossly slimy.
I could eat an onion whole though, love them.

I started out with you, then you lost me a little, and by the end, well, frankly GM, I left a little disgusted.

You all need fussy eater therapy ! Wait til the civilisation ends and we all end up eating cockcroaches and crickets. You'll be glad of it then ;)

Can't help you there, I love mushrooms :D

I think the interesting thing about many of the people I know who dislike meat and fish is that they never had any growing up. I think like many things, meat and fish is very much an acquired taste.
And I found that when I tried some after not having had any for 3 years, I intensely disliked it as well.

I wouldn't call people eating meat hypocritical at all. It's their own choice, after all. I only get annoyed when I'm being criticised for not wanting to eat it. :)

I tried squid before and nearly hurled up my guts. In Thailand a bit of crab was left in my kao phad gai (fried rice with chicken) and again I gagged. Love bananas but can't eat them or I'm crippled with cramps. :o

Butter. The look, smell and taste just make me want to retch. It's practically a phobia.

Interesting. I quite like salted edamame on the side when I'm eating anything Japanese. Like nutty little broad beans, only tastier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,032 ✭✭✭tastyt

Bananas. Ugh, it's the mushy sloppy texture.

Oh and porridge, same deal. Anything that you have to add loadsa **** to to make it edible is just not worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,628 ✭✭✭brevity

Also hate mushrooms, slimy bastards. They sneak in every where as well.

Mayonnaise, or rather the use of it, is a bit of a bugbear of mine. A small amount on either slice of bread is all that's needed, if its oozing out the sides then you, Mr/Mrs Sandwich Maker, have ****ed up and I will be cursing you for ruining my sandwich.

Milk, but just on it's own. The way it clings to the sides of a glass, the way it gives people milk moustaches. Uggggh! But I can handle a drop in tea/coffee.
Mussels don't taste too bad, but the look of them and the texture. Can't go there!
Lamb, the smell and the look of it make me gag.
    I love mushrooms!

Milk!! I was traumatised as very hungover teen with milk. I can't even pick it up in see through cartons without feeling nauseous. Disgusting.

With you on the milk - hate the taste, and it more often than not makes me vomit.
As does coffee, incidentally. But I do love, love, love tea.

    It's cow tit milk ffs.

Eggs.. Whether they be fried, scrambled, poached etc. can't stand the things. The smell is enough to make me gag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Beetroot or red cabbage, I hate the way the colour of them stains other foods and for that reason alone I've never even tried them!

    Yeah, human tits.

I'd drink a woman's breastmilk no bother and indeed have often asked, in vain, for the odd sip.

Mushrooms, onions, lamb, red cabbage... A lot of foods mentioned here that I love :D

I hate cucumber though, it tastes like poison and repeats for the day.

Also grapefruits and rock hard unripe plums from the supermarket, both are about as palatable as battery acid.

Not exactly a food but I also hate 7up. I just find the flavour nauseating.

Beans. And the bean juice which contaminates all on the plate

Onion, in any form in my food and I'll puke, instantly.
I cannot be in the same room/area as fried onion (smell) .
The amount of chefs, cooks and wannabe chefs that cannot prepare food for me in a restaurant is simply staggering.
It uncovers a lot of brought in food in eateries. I've upped and walked out of a couple of well established restaurants in Cork

Potatoes. Hate them. They're boring. Unless they're roasted and fried. Thoughts of boiled or mashed potato makes me cry.

Humus. Who on earth eats that nonsense? Anyone claims they like the taste is a lying hippy with self esteem issues.

Spinach/kale. "Ooh look at me eat my superfoods". These people should be locked up.

im so glad so many people hate mushrooms as much as i do
the look of them make me want to vomit all over the place, ranker than rank even typing this out is making me shudder.

And pheasent, the smell of it cooking is just something that stays in your nostrils for life.

    Heh, thought that said "humans".

Agree with you on kale and spinach; sure kale's been around years! Didn't we eat curly kale at Halloween?
Why is it only a superfood nowadays?

Spinach can pi** off; dry leaves of nothingness with stems that choke you as punishment for even eating it.
