Need a reference to apply for a course

So I'm on maternity leave at the moment and while I'm happy to go back to work for now, ultimately I'd like to go back to college in the spring and I'd like to get the interview for the course done before I go back, but I'd need a reference from work who I don't really want to know anything about it yet. Should I leave the course application till nearer the deadline, or just go for it? There is always the chance I won't be offered a place, or that I will chose not to take it. Is it possible to keep it on the down low or can anyone offer any advice on approaching my supervisor about this?

You shouldn't need the reference till you've been offered the course.
Have you spoken to the college about it?

That makes sense I'll go back and ask them. They definitely want a recent one which rules out former employers for me. I think they might contact references before they offer interviews though.
