Did I dream this sign?

I was in a supermarket a little while back, and I saw a sign that basically said 'use a basket for your groceries, not a shopping bag' and they had some 'clever' title for it like 'Clear Shopping' or something. Nobody I've met since knows about this or which supermarket I was in, so I may have dreamed it. Please, someone put me out of my misery (by telling me which supermarket it was in, or just shooting me).

You could be right. Some people dont take a basket when entering the shop but put their messages in their bag and head to the checkout. Of course some chancers just walk out with the stuff in the bag without paying. With the stuff in the bag people assume all has been through the register. I see people using their own bag to carry the groceries around the shop but in fairness they do pass through the till. I have heard of one case where someone was stopped by security after slipping out without paying. Was in a local Super Valu.

Was it the sign that suggests not stealing the shopping baskets? Something along the lines of..
Please Help Us Keep The Price Of Groceries Down..
..By Not Removing This Basket From The Store.

I've seen a sign like that before, so you didn;t make it up. But it was a long time ago.

Yes it's quite common if you only have a few bits to get to go bring a bag with you and fill this bag rather than bothering with a basket, particularly in the German stores as I don't think these have baskets. I've seen a similar sign somewhere but can't remember where, most likely Tesco as I don't often go anywhere else.

I've often done it and never had any hassle but can see why shops would have issue with it.

Tesco in Maynooth you can get a gun to scan all the items yourself and pack them in your bags/trolley straight away (am not sure how they police this, I suppose they keep an eye on people or spot check some) then pay at the til based on whatever has been read through the scanner. So seems more of a move towards trusting the customer in some stores and distrusting/ business as usual in others

    Aldi have one like
'Please take a trolley, because your hands are about to be full of amazing offers'

Sry to be taking up your valuable time

Anyway, I used to do it myself in Aldi until they finally got baskets, but this is definitely a sign I saw/imagined quite recently. It was the 'clever' title that got me, like they'd given a name to people who shop with baskets...

I have seen signs to that effect in several supermarkets and shops.

Jesus, is AH always like this?

Anyway, yes, the gist of the sign was the same as the Londis one, although I don't know if I've been in a Londis lately....

Try and retrace your steps. Do you keep a dairy? Read over the last few week's entries if you get a minute.
Maybe have a look in your fridge or cupboards also. An item you have purchased might just jog your memory.
If we are going to have any hope of tracking down this specific sign we will need as much information as possible.

I once saw a sign on a footpath (like a roadworks type of sign) that just said "Temporary Sign". It was there for about 2 weeks and then it was gone.

It wasn't replaced with another sign. There were no works going on around it. That sign's only purpose was to say it wouldn't always be there.

I don't know how a business enterprise established for the harvesting or processing (or both) of animal milk – mostly from cows or goats, but also from buffaloes, sheep, horses or camels – for human consumption would help him remembering where he saw that sign. Unless it was in the dairy section of the supermarket of course.

    Makes sense to me.

There's a supermarket in Marbella with a security guard on the door watching everyone going in. If you're carrying any kind of shopping bag, you have two options - you can leave it with the security guard and pick it up on your way out, or you can get it shrink wrapped, like in the airport, to "prove" that you haven't opened it and put anything into while you've been shopping. The application of the rules is erratic. Sometimes they'd insist on wrapping handbags and backpacks, other times just shopping bags.

What made it worse is that they are located in a huge shopping centre, so plenty of customers will have been shopping elsewhere first.

I think they got away with it though because they were the only big supermarket in a 10km radius.

That's just like the 'This page is intentionally left blank' note in a document on a page which essentially makes it unblanked.

    Yes, but intentionally so.

Its very inconvenient having to cue up and go through the till.

Its much more convenient to slip out un-obtrusively.

    I just don't like delaying people !

Oh I'm just tired of comments that go right over my head and I've had a few barneys recently so I can't tell the difference anymore.
