    Hi All,
Just returned home from travelling and looking to get a car in the next couple of weeks before my NCB gets wiped out. Have a budget of 6-8k and was looking at a few 08 diesel Golfs, Passats and Mondeos but am drawn towards the Mazda 6 now. Was just wondering to hear people's opinions on them(08 model up) or other cars within that price range? Thanks!

Serious difference in tax rates so might look for alternatives

Just on this, anyone have issue with the 2008 1.8 petrol being hard on fuel? I assume its more on how its been driven?

Also was advised by a cousin that they can be hard to sell on again (he used to work in car sales), any opinions?

I have a 2015 Mazda 6 1.8 petrol, (automatic) 2hrs per day on motorway and I'm getting around 38mpg. Not the best car I've had for petrol but I really like driving it, extremely soft going and very comfortable.

Was that a left over old shape 6? I thought the current model had a 2.0 litre Sky Active petrol engine and they sold non of them here this year.

....sorry, yes it's a 2.0. litre, a current model, yes.

Had 06 1.8 petrol for year. Covered 20,000 miles Motorway 100kph returns 42 mpg. 120kph returned 35mpg. Lack of 6th gear on motorway can hurt. So keep at 100.

Great cheap reliable car. Nice car on back roads too.

I was interested in buying a 2009/2010 Mazda 6 2.2d Sport as my next car as currently have my Honda Accord 2.2iDTEC on the market.

Just wondering why you are saying no to the diesel one??

The Mazda 2.0d is highly likely to suffer catastrophic engine failure. It dumps diesel in to the engine oil and the engine oil then doesn't do it's job properly.

The Mazda 2.2d suffers similar issues, but not to the same extent as the 2.0d it replaced. As long as you keep a regular eye on oil levels (issue if it starts rising) then they should be OK, but it's not going to be as maintenance free as the Honda undoubtably has been.

Great thank you, hopefully if I got one and serviced it every 8,000 miles it should be ok! People rave about Japanese reliability but all cars have their faults (The clutch on the Honda being one in my case, though this was replaced by Honda dealer).

The look and the 185bhp is what's taking my eye.

Would anyone recommend the Ford Mondeo Titanium X over the Mazda? Something like this one (although its the 140bhp Zetec model so not quite the same level of performance)......

The thing is with the Mazda you don't know how the previous owner treated the car, whether they regularly allowed the oil to be diluted and what damage has been done as a result. With most other cars you could go by the service history as a fair indicator but with the Mazda the damage could already have been done by service time.

In fairness it's not the fault of the owner that those engines are sh1te.

I don't see what you will gain by going from an accord to a Mazda 6 of a similar age. Those accords are far superior to the 6 imo.

    Thanks Johnboy,

The reason I'm changing is because I need to free up a few euros.

Would I be better off with a mondeo?

I didn't say it was the owners fault they sh1t themselves though. But not everyone will check their oil levels until a warning light comes on meaning damage could be done before people address it. Would you not agree its a valid point to bring up?

Personally I'd keep the Accord you have, you know the car and you know it's history. You could be buying someone else's trouble that could potentially wipe out any cash you free up from the sale of the Accord if another car turns out to be a lemon. Free up cash by other means would be my advise.

Does anyone know if this has been sorted on the new Mazda6? I had one at the weekend as a rental and went up to Joe Duffy this afternoon to see what I could get one for. Lovely drive and I was very tempted, but no so sure now...

Not giving the same issues, just multiple, frequent, serious other issues.....
