Need to get some Hryvnia as I'll be in Ukraine. I'm with AIB but afaik they don't sell it. Hopefully someone here will be able to help me find the best bank/place to exchange to get the best value.

Also, with AIB, if I had to resort to using my debit card while there would there be big charges since it's a non EU country?

Honestly the answer is in the Kyiv airport as you're probably not going to find it outside of Ukraine. As you walk out from the luggage area directly to your left you will find two exchange offices. The fist one offer a better rate but longer queue and worse opening hours; you may also be approached by individuals offering to exchange for you but I'd only use official exchange offices (you'll also need to keep the receipt if you want to exchange back to euros!). Also the euro bills you give them have to pristine; if they are not they will refuse to exchange them. If you're staying in Kyiv then limit what you exchange at the airport as you'll get better rate in the city (it's about 400 hryva to go into the city; once again make sure to agree the rate up front before going into the taxi or you'll get tourist taxed, i.e. ripped off).

I've a friend living over there and they're collecting me. So it'd be better to wait until I'm in the city and exchange money there? Any suggestions on the best places to exchange it?

Also, any advice on using ATMs etc. with the debit card? Or should I avoid it? If I drew out my money at one instead of exchanging like I normally do in European countries would there be a much bigger charge since it's outside EU?

Sorry as I'm only going there on business trips I never get around to exchange in Kyiv but your friend should know what's the recommended places.

Check with your bank to confirm but I'd guess you'd end up with charges (usually only GBP and possibly SEK/CHF/DKK are excluded).

Exchange when you get there, the majority of banks in the city centre have exchange counters. Go to a bank rather than an independent currency exchange.
Do you have a credit card? You'll be screwed over with fees for using a debit card to withdraw cash. If you don't have a credit card get a Travel money card if you can. http://www.cashpassport.com/1/en/ie/Buying-Your-Card/
