I'm looking for some advice please.
I'm learning to drive at the moment,
I'm in my late 20s. Being told I should buy a car to practice between lessons, but the insurance is a lot more than I was expecting around 2.5k is the average driving a 1l kia Picanto.

Would I be better trying to continue with a load of lessons and hope to pass my test? And get cheaper insurance?

Do you have a car to practice in at the moment? It will be very difficult to pass your test and more importantly, to be feel confident driving in general unless you are practicing between lessons.

Unfortunately I don't have anything to practice in.

I don't know how much use it is to you but you'll definitely get insurance for less than that. I know 2 first time learners that got first time insurance over the summer for €1,400- €1,500. One was around 30 and the other is 44. Honestly, the amount of time and lessons that it would take to get your through a test on lessons alone would make you consider taking the plunge. In my case, I was a first time learner 15 years ago and my insurance was IR£3,885.85 in an £800 1.4 Fiat :/

You should be able to do better than that. IIRC I paid around £1,100 fifteen years ago at the age of 28 on a 1.6 Mk. I Mondeo. I was on a provisional at the time.

You can't do any driving at all, if your license has expired. You can't do the rest of your lessons and you can't sit your test, unless you have a valid license. If you are able to get the rest of your lessons in, before your license expires, yes, you can still apply for your test. But you won't be able to sit it, if you don't have a valid license. They check for it on the day of the test.

All true, however, I'm thinking the poster may believe he's in a catch 22 situation as he's moving onto a third or subsequent permit and must book a test now.

It is the case that he can simply apply for the test without having completed EDT in order to renew his permit. Yes, you must hold a valid permit to take lessons and sit a test even if this means you have to renew the permit and a week later pass your test and apply for the full licence it means two trips to the NDLS- it can't be done any more efficiently than this.
