    depends on your needs.

if you are farting around town a 1.0 k11 micra or 1.3 e10 corolla would be good.

if you are doing long runs, something like a 90bhp Focus TDDi would be good.

my current Celica cost a shade over 2 grand and it's doing a respectable 42-43 mpg on my commute which is all motorway, it's a savage around town though, does more like half that.

Mk1 focus tddi gives exceptional mpg on long runs. I've done 250 miles since monday, and it's used just over a quarter of a tank. (Not very technical, I know!)

Back when I was a broke ass student I had a mk1 TDDi focus. I was based in South Dublin and prospective mrs. Fanboi was in Waterford... used to stick a tenner into it in Dunlaoire and drive real handy and i'd make it the whole way to Waterford :P

Not very sceintific either but around 55-60 to the gallon.

Good examples of those civic are rare enough these days. Something like an e12 corolla will achieve similar miles per gallon and its a much more modern car. A 02-03 saloon can be got for around 2k these days.
