Do dealers take trade in against lesser cars

    Hi all,

I have a 2009 Honda Accord EX and I am looking to save a few quid.....I have it up on all the car sites as well as DD and Adverts for what I believe to be a good price but I've yet to even have 1 call about it.

So I was thinking, could I go to a dealer and trade in my car for something smaller/cheaper and actually get some money back off the dealer (I'm probably mad I know)!!

Very rare. You will find that your car at trade price is probably lower than the cheaper car on the dealers forecourt.

Very few dealers (if any) are going to give you a car and money to drive away. The aim of a dealer is to make money not give it away and take in stock of a higher value.

That said, if your car is an absolute peach they may take it off you but you can rest assured that you'll be getting a lot less than it's worth - even at trade price.

You say it's advertised at a good price. Have you compared it to similar cars for sale? It does sound like you might be asking a bit much. Consider dropping the price a small bit and see what happens. You'll still do better than downgrading via the dealer route.

    Thanks for the advice.....

Yeah I have dropped the price but I may drop it again so it is below the current price bracket.

Have lowered my expectations of what I would get for it as it is still a buyers market!

If you're not getting a single call from your ads something is wrong somewhere surely?

Have you got a link to the ad?

A 2009 Accord EX should be a very saleable car. There are never too many around at any given time and they are always in demand.

It doesn't happen often in these type of threads but, fair play, that's actually a decent ad.

Could maybe stick in a couple more pics (driver's seat, couple more exterior shots).

And, to be honest, I'd remove the *LOW MILEAGE* bit from the title, 92k miles (almost 150k km) is not exactly low mileage to most people.

But apart from that, great ad. I have no idea about the price though, I'm sure someone else can let you know if it's high.

    This one has similar mileage:
    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Honda/Accord/DTEC-ES/201525234293834/

Obviously not an EX model but is someone willing to pay €1500 extra for the extra spec?

    Another one here:
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2009-honda-accord-idtec-ex-gt/10254140?offset=6

VRT is about 2500 so under €13k landed and registered here.

This is what you are competing against.

Thank you for this. Gives me something to think about........maybe €13,999 with a bit of wiggle room??

The short answer in this case is yes.

This €1 short of €14k is fairly off putting, people aren't stupid.

I'd stick the original Plates back on.
You're alienating a lot of potential Buyers with 'Boy racer' plates....especially at this Price Bracket.
Not having a go at you, just trying to help your sale.

I think the ad has a lot of useless info.
    * It has Hondas bulletproof reliability

    * It looks extremely smart, especially. adding the tinted rear windows, rear screen and modified numberplates (will also provide original plates)

    * It has relatively low mileage for an Accord at this age

Maybe mention anything of note that's been done with sevicing beyond the regular oil changes?

But at the same time it's too easy to read too much into ads. If someone wanted one, there's nothing there that should stop them calling provided the price is right.

also, sorry for being a bit pedantic, but I would loose the reference to modified number plates. To me that adds nothing to the value of the car but could potentially add a note of risk to some buyers....modified number plates...what else is is modified.....oh lord its a boy racer.....run...

For the record there is nothing else modified but I take your point. Much appreciated!

Can't see you getting anywhere near that much tbh mate. I'd knock 3 or 4 grand off that if I was you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭Armaghmagic

Thanks Jesus but with the kit, engine and type of car that it is I won't be selling it for €10,000!

Nice car. Not sure if the car has it but if it does then bluetooth would be useful to add. Agree regarding the numberplates. It'd be the first thing i'd change if I were to buy it.

Thanks I took off the comment about the nameplates.

Will replace it with the bluetooth as indeed the car has it along with voice activation
