Where do the entry fees for the ploughing match go to?
    Must amount to many millions.

Say 200,000 entries at €20 each is €4m!plus costs of having a stand at it!however, insurance, roadways, probably a contribution to the gardai for the 3days,plus the farmer who owns the 800 acres, probably not a lot left!

Deservedly too! Great show and a lot of work and responsibilities!
    Should it be voluntary?

There were 600 volunteers working today. Was talking to one on the way out. They start at 6 in the morning and it might be 8 or so before they finish.

12.1 million and they manage to get 600 volunteers. What sort of drugs are they giving these people to get that many volunteers. If I could get 6 for a few days I'd be happy.

Like it or not its the only show in town now. If it wasn't a finely tuned money making machine it would be gone years ago.

It's success is probably a lot down to the way it's evolved the past decade. It's become all things to all people and moved away from being a farming event bringing in new business and attendees.

Events likes these are massive money no matter what industry it is. When I was in transition year we did an event. Charged kids from other schools a fiver to get in, we had speakers and sponsorships and spot prizes and gifts for the speakers and after all the expenses, the profits paid for our debs.

Each and everyone of those volunteers gets 100 euro a day paid to the local club or charity. Community at its best.

Do you not remember what happened in Goal, Rehab. Proper goverance of all these voluntary organisations, charities etc is not a bad thing at all.
