    Hi folks,

I've recently decided to shut down my Sky account, I'm wondering if it's possible to give a friend my Terabyte box to replace her bog standard Sky Box?

If she just hooked it up and put her viewing card in would that be ok or are boxes paired with cards etc.... Any input appreciated.

If she has premium channels, such as sky moves or sports, it'll have to be paired.

But having it paired is only a simple phone call, they won't ask too many questions

Cool, sounds promising, I assume no extra fee would have to be paid?

No nothing extra to pair the card to the box, but they will only pair it to the box if there's nothing outstanding on the account it came from.

and assuming that the OP's contract has expired too

She should be able to use the online tool:
    https://activatemychannels.sky.com/

But why are you giving it away? The 1tb boxes are worth decent money and if she doesn't have HD then she's not really getting any major benefit from it

    Hi Potential Underachiever,

Thank you for your post about Sky. As others have said, there would be no problem with pairing your old box to an active account, as long as the box is from a fully cancelled account or has itself been swapped for another box on an active account - this can be done in a matter of moments over the phone.

Did you know that we are now live on Boards.ie? The Sky Ireland Talk To site is at this link and we would be more than happy to assist you.

If you wish to post your questions / queries relating to Sky on our site, we will endeavour to resolve any issue for you.

    Hi

I have a multiroom setup. I box that can record and one that cannot.

My friend has given me a spare box with a HDD. My question is, can i replace the box without a HDD with a box that has a HDD so that I have recording facility on both STBs?

I already have the necessary cabling in place for this so my question is do Sky allow you to have a multiroom setup with 2 boxes that have a HDD?

    Thanks.

    Short answer is yes.

Come to think of it the long answer is more or less the same but you will need to contact Sky to have the card paired with the new box and also ensure that the box isn't currently part of a Sky subscription that your friend may have.

    Thanks muffler.

My friends sky expired recently so the box is not associated with an active account.

    Hi TheHulk,

As muffler has said above, it's a relatively simple process to amend your account to show 2 recording boxes - if you haven't already done so, you would just need to give us a call on 0818719819 and advise that you have a second-hand box that you want to pair to your account.

We will ask you for a few details about the box and that's it! Once the updated details are in our system, your box should be working within 4 hours (it is usually much, much quicker than that and often the changes take effect straight away).

    Regards,
    Sam

    Ok, a quick update folks....

Unfortunately my friend was not able to use my terabyte box because as she only had the basic Sky box which I did mention in the OP she would have supposedly needed to call out an engineer to split the cables at a cost of 100euro and even if that was done she would have also needed to upgrade to HD, so it was going to cost her either way.

She only wanted the box to use it to record stuff and wasn't worried about having HD, as an aside the current basic sky+ box she has is faulty and only records randomly not all the time, would she be entitled to a box that actually works seeing as she obviously didn't break the box, would sky take care of that for no charge, any sky reps here?

    Ty

No she wouldn't. Sky only give out free boxes to new customers, not to people who have been with them since the beginning. Loyalty isn't something they care about. The will give her the generous option of purchasing a new box or for about 75% of the cost of a new one a reconditioned one.:(

If your friend already has sky + box then you simply need to swap the box and ring sky to pair the card to the new box...no need for any call out. She does not need to take the hd package ...so I dunno who advised you there would be a 100euro call out...if she has sky plus she has everything already in place...

If she had a standard non recording box she would only have one cable in place and a quad lnb would need to be attached to the dish and a second cable ran to the room where the box is placed, there is no splitting of the cabling as you suggested...you require 2 cables from dish to the box..

Not sure where you got the info about HD but your friend would NOT have to subscribe to it. Its an optional extra.

Likewise the cable cannot be split as you put it so again that info is wrong. If she wanted the full functionality of Sky+ then a second cable is needed. However she can still record on one cable but would not be able to watch another channel however.

In your first post you stated that it was bog standard Sky box she had and you also mention this above. However you also say its a bog standard Sky+ box which is obviously different as most likely there would be 2 cables feeding the box if its a Sky+ box. Im not being pedantic but just pointing out the difference as that would most likely dictate if a second cable is required.

I really cant see what the issue is with you giving her your box and this has been confirmed earlier by a Sky rep. Maybe you could tell us where you were given the details you posted.

Hi, I apologise for the confusion, it was badly worded by me, the actual story is she has two boxes a basic sky box and sky+ box, she wanted to switch out her basic one for my terabyte, her parents have the sky+ box in the sitting room, so that's why it would suit much better if she could switch with the other box in her room, the basic one.

When I mentioned the sky+ box I was talking about a different box in the house, sort of a different issue about it not recording properly.

    Clear as mud I know!

If she has a sky.plus and a std box oin place then she already has a quad in place and simple needs another cable brought from the dish to the room required.

Without the second feed she can switch the bix to single feed only and record a channel but wint be able to change channel so its still of use for now. Just put cable into the feed no1 on box and ring sky to pair the card to the box
