So I'm an employed postman who's just set up a business servicing mowers strimmers etc, I need a van for collecting and dropping off etc etc, because I'm employed and had a small claim last year there no one who'll insure me, feck me I know the claim was my fault but why the refusal to quote me at all? Sickened by the whole shower of gangsters to be honest, just trying to make a living in this country is becoming more and more difficult, might just get fired and sponge off the dole like a lot of others do.

Any penalty points or convictions on your license. Seems strange. Have you tried a broker or tried ringing them because if you had a recent claim the Internet quote won't work.

No points, rang 5 or 6 brokers and insuremyvan even rang my own car insurance company, no joy 2 said it was because I'm employed as a postman even tho I'm not using the van for that. Rest say it's because of the claim

Ask for a manager, some of the agents are idiots!

Or better yet call into an in a insurance office and explain the situation. Get better info there and not clueless idiots who want you off the phone and don't want to be dealing with the issue or don't know how to deal with the issue. You having a job as a postman should not affect commercial insurance.

Rsa do my car insurance, they won't quote over the phone and referred me back to 123.ie (who I got the policy from) who don't do van or commercial insurance, reckon I'll have to buy the van and just resell it to recoup my money or I'll lose my 200e deposit

Unfortunately you are a victim of the behaviour of others.

You are a postman, looking to insure a van, in general with insurance when something seems a bit suspect the insurer will err on the side of caution and just decline to quote.

Im not for one second saying you are dodgy in any way but with so many chancers out there giving false or misleading information to insurers in order to get policies, everyone is potentially a fraudster.

RSA are you ultimate insurers and whether or not 123.ie (their agents) do or don't do commercial insurance is not the point. RSA are obliged to offer you a quotation. Having said that, they are entitled to verify that you are setting up a legitimate business and not just a 'man with a van'

Are you applying for VAT? Have you registered the business? Anything else?

Business is registered, I'm not vat regd yet as my turnover is still small, but I intend to down the line. I informed them I'm not using the van to or from work as I've a motorbike for that, can't use the car as social domestic kicks in..... Would forgetting to tell them I'm employed count as disclosure?

As you have a legitimate business you are entitled to a quote to cover it. You need a good broker to present your case to RSA (not 123.ie). If that fails, you need to go to the Declined Cases Committee of the Irish Insurance Federation

No Bonus, previous claim, part-time occupation, it's not going to be cheap. Given that the van only cost €1,000 tells me it might be over 10 years old, which is a big part of your problem

1st time insurance on a 14yr old van is a big ask, leaving aside any previous accident

get an Estate car or a trailer.

get an Estate car or a trailer.

Can't do that as private car insurance only covers social and domestic use.
