Buying a suit, bit of help.

    Hi peeps,

Have to pick up a suit for a wedding here in Vancouver. My GF is part of the wedding party, and I have to get a suit.

I have had suits before back in Ireland, they were all charcoal. They worked a treat but I was thinking something different this time.

I have my eye on something navy or a lighter grey. Simple and with a more modern fit, slimmer if I can. I did get a suit fitted at a very very upmarket place here ($1500, which is way over budget) and I was told I have an athletic seat, so I am a bigger build and I would be aware of how that could sit on me and make me look like a cartoon character. I will get it tailored also.

Obviously hard to say what would look good or not look good on me. Just looking for tips on what a good all-round suit would be good to go for, weather navy isn't good for a wedding, likewise with the grey. I'll be wearing light brown shoes with it also, so I am edging for a navy to change it up. Probably more weddings to go to in the future as well so this suit might have more than one event in it, and I saw a pairing up of a navy suit with a light grey waistcoat, which might be interesting.

Thanks for any helps or tips etc.

Can never go wrong with a navy suit. Check out the Tommy Bowe what he wore for his own wedding, really nice suit.

Navy is a fantastic choice. I'd always go for a 3 piece too, if you can afford it, to give yourself some options. For weddings to make it look less "business-y" avoid a white shirt. I was watching "Crazy Stupid Love" the other night and I'd forgotten how great light blue and navy worked as a combo. I can't find a decent pic but it's what Ryan Gosling is wearing in the final scenes.

    Thanks guys.

Will defy go with Navy, keep it simple and clean and get it tailored to fit better. Will also check out the examples mentioned above.

TBH you're better off paying less for the suit, and having extra to have it fitted to you perfectly. Also, very often it's the accessories that make a suit look like it's "worth" 10 times more. Honestly a €200 suit can look amazing if you get it fitted and if you get the right shirt, tie, cufflinks, etc. :)

Accessories being things like shirt, tie etc?

For the 3 piece option, could you change up the colour of the waist coat? I have seen light grey matched with navy and it looks quite nice.

Also, is there a particular name for this style of shirt collar?

Yep. But also cuff links, tie bar, lapel pin, Watch.

It can look well but if you do that, I'd recommend keeping everything else pretty simple. It's a pretty big statement.

That looks like a fairly standard point collar, but the collar stays are fixing the collar down. There may be a collar bar in play. Or perhaps a tab- it's hard to see.

    It's called a "tab collar".

Picked up a nice dark navy suit with a crisp white shirt for $900 here, that includes tailoring to fit as well. Not a bad deal.

Need to get the jacket taken in a tab and sleeves shortened, and the seat on the trousers along with tapering the legs to sit nice on the Barkers I have with it. Will finish it off with a nice pocket accent, brown belt, cuffs and a skinny dark tie.

Thanks again for the help guys.
