Leather boots squeaking

I bought a lovely pair of leather ankle boots yesterday. Tried them on this morning... and they squeak like I'm stepping on mice. Google is telling me to use either oil/lotion or talcum powder, but I just want to know if anyone here has any other ideas, or knows what sort of lotion I should be using (eg, would a moisturiser from Boots work, or do I have to get something expensive).

To clarify, it's not the soles against the floor that are squeaking, it's the top part, around the laces, squeaking with itself.

And I've foolishly taken the tags off, so returning them isn't an option

EDIT: Aha unbelievable, I've also managed to buy a squeaky jacket:pac:
