    Hi,
A few quid to invest, are BOI IFUNDs or AIB MAPs any good?
be leaving for at least 5 years locked away, what sort of return can you make and is the risk high?
anywhere else maybe to put cash.
    Thanks.

Thread here on AIB funds: http://www.askaboutmoney.com/threads/aib-irish-life-maps-fund-query.193108/

Problem with both (and all of these funds IMO) is lack of transparency of charges e.g. IFunds brochure hsa following for various IFunds:

0.20% per annum higher than standard fund charges
0.25% per annum higher than standard fund charges
0.25% per annum higher than standard fund charges
0.30% per annum higher than standard fund charge

How vague is that?! What are these "standard fund charges". Absolutely nowhere will they tell you the exact TER of the fund.

I put money in MAPS 5 to get some experience with investing. I don't mind too much if I lose a bit on it, but obviously I expect to beat deposit rates.

Those AIB funds seem to be run by Irish Life. Why use AIB instead of Irish Life? What's the advantage?

Proceed with extreme caution. You'll be doing well to make anything.

Returns are usually underwhelming and regardless expect a deep screw.

MAPS funds seem decent. To be honest most equity funds have done well over the last 5 years, it would be best to drip feed money in rather than throw in a lump. If there were a drop at least you'd be buying units at lower prices plus no early exit charges.

MAPs offers funds with 'low' risk through to funds with 'high' risk. AIB is a Tied Agent of Irish Life, meaning the branches are a distribution channel for Irish Life products, and Irish Life only. MAPS has some neat features which provide good levels of diversity and others which in theory will protect your fund if there is another down-turn.
You really should go and talk to someone in AIB/Broker/Advisor and make up your own mind if it is for you or if an alternative is more to your liking.

Would something like Berkshire Hataway shares be an option for you if your thinking something long term ,the guy the runs them has a reasonable track record of consistency over the long term :D.
Have a think about it,some random irish life fund manager,or Warren and Charlie .
