Out of curiosity, how easy (if at all possible) is the harddrive on the 12GB PS3 to replace?

Very easy, Sony even provide instructions:

    http://faq.en.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7776/~/changing-or-upgrading-the-ps3-super-slim-hard-disk-drive-%28hdd%29

But you'll have to buy a bracket as well as a HDD, they don't seem to include them with the console.

None of those items work for me.

UNFORTUNATELY WE CAN'T PROCESS YOUR ORDER AT THE MOMENT.
SOME ITEMS IN YOUR CART ARE OUT OF STOCK. PLEASE VISIT YOUR NEAREST STORE.

Getting to be the same with a lot of bargains/sale listed

    CPW website is shockingly bad

Checked out the TV in the OP yesterday and it was showing as in stock right up to the "okay, let's do it" button (WTF??)

Then "oops, some of the items in your basket are out of stock"

It used to be shockingly bad.

Then they redesigned it, and achieved the near impossible by making it even worse. Its almost completely dysfunctional now. If it didn't work at all it would nearly be better. Then you wouldn't waste your time trying to use it.

Fecking site, says the ps3 is in stock but when I go to buy it it's out of stock.

Is it a 2.5" hard drive?
My wife bought a ps3 9 months ago in the local charity shop which I really need to unbox.

    Yes, 2.5inch HDD. SATA IIRC.

Got a 12Gb reduced in HN a while back and stuck in a 250Gb HDD from a dead laptop.

You will need the cradle though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭salamanca22

The cradle isn't required, on my last 12gb console I had a 250gb HD in there just which some cardboard jammed in to keep it snug. It worked fine for 6 months until I sold it and can only assume it is still fine.

I think most people would want to keep their warranty intact and not use "bits of cardboard" to do the job of the cradle that'll cost under €15

There is no need for the cradle at all trust me. And it does not void your warranty.

The point of the cradle is to keep the hard drive stationary and protect it from shock while it is in the console, the cardboard does exactly that for free.

I am an engineer if that means anything to the debate (Hint: it does as I design things for a living)

I would have though putting flammable material beside hot electronics isn't ideal.

He's an engineer. He knows these things ;)
Part that generates heat. Material that dries out and is flammable... No risk at all.:)

I wonder could I start a new business supplying cardboard for ps3's!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,179 ✭✭✭salamanca22

The heat that is generated by a hard drive is no where near enough to ignite cardboard or even 'dry' it out.

Corrugated cardboard has a fire point of 258c (citation) most hard drives have a maximum temperature point of 60c before it will start to malfunction. So without doing to actual math I am sure you can see there is a massive margin of safety there.

Like I said I had it in there for six months as so far as I know it is still in there a year and a half later with it's current owner.

Take my free advice or not, this is bargain alerts and I am alerting users to the bargain that using cardboard to make sure the hard drive is snug is 100% a reliable alternative than paying €15 for something they do not need. But of course each to their own.

Are any of these deals available in-store of are they website only?

I've had a piece of cardboard wedged into my PS3 to keep the drive secure for almost 3 years now and my house isn't a smouldering ruin yet. If you are a person who would move their console to different rooms or to a friends house on occasion, get a cradle but if it's sitting on a shelf under the tv forever without being moved, a cardboard wedge will do the job.

Just for sh1ts and giggles I sent a complaint email to CPW Customer Service......

    They replied as follows;

    "Thank you for your email.

I'm sorry to hear that you have been unable to make your purchase.

I am unsure if you are referring to the Carphone Warehouse website as the product you have mentioned is not something that we sell. Please could you provide a link to the Carphone Warehouse page that you have found this on?"

I have provided them with a link and a screenshot and await further reply LOL.

Tried the CPW site again for the 32" Techwood TV and managed to put a sale through!!

Free delivery included. Now the wait begins.....

EDIT: Nearly an hour later and no confirmation email......yet

Just tried to order the PS3 and got the "can't process your order" page, hopefully its not out of stock.

That's what I was getting with the TV

Customer Service got back to me to say that "from time to time offers are so popular that they run out of stock before the website can be updated" but that the TV I wanted "appeared to be available again

PS3 is potentially out of stock but keep trying

Has anyone purchased a PS3 or the xbox from the actual CPW store or is this just an online offer.

When I eventually got to order the TV earlier today it said it was only available online, so I assume it's the same with the consoles.

For those of you who know. Is xbox 360 still thee thing to buy? Isn't the xbox 1 better?my son wants an xbox but I'm just worried if i buy the 360 it will be out of date? No games for it etc

Yes, the XBOX ONE is better but the games are more expensive. The 360 still has a good bit of life in it, there is a massive library of games for it, you can get them used for peanuts. I have a 360 and I still bought one on this offer simply to get a new console to last me another few years.
I don't mind not playing all the newest releases as I don't have the time for it :-)

To be honest the xbox one is the one to buy. Xbox 360 is old it was released in 2005.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,065 ✭✭✭crazygeryy

thanks for the replies.they seem to be all sold out anyway.and i rang one or two shops and they said it has nothing to do with them.its online only.

Gamers who want the most up to date games and console graphics will buy PS4 or Xbox One. As mention, Xbox 360 was released ten years ago but if your son just likes to play games and isn't concerned with the most up to date stuff it should be a good present as you can still buy the old games cheap enough. I am not sure about online play as they turn off the servers after a while (dunno which 360 games are still online)

Well that was quick. TV I ordered yesterday arrived today. Happy days
