The whole supplements industry is nothing more than a cash cow IMO. Fair enough if you're a bodybuilder who needs that extra protein or have a medical condition but for everyone else, a balanced diet will ensure you get what you need. Companies don't have to prove that these work as with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, etc, merely that they are what they say they are. All you're paying for is expensive pee basically.

Personally speaking, I do supplement with vitamin D, throw in a bit of zinc and extra Vit C from time to time. The D because it's hard to get enough sun to build it up naturally. Plus a balanced diet is ideal, but how many people are eating one?

D can be a tricky one to get enough of alright. I never bother myself though. Do you notice any effect if you don't supplement.

Regarding the balanced diet, I don't think eating well is difficult once the obvious dead weight is removed. Good info on this is ubiquitous.

Yes, but it's subtle and takes time to have any effect(either stopping or starting). My skin. feels better, sleep seems to be deeper. Could be all placebo mind you, but it's cheap so… :)

vit D is dirt cheap and well worth supplementing year round. it's *so* hard to get enough through sunlight in Ireland even in the summer and it's so important to our well being

the diet thing is true enough, to a point, as well. the nutritional profiles of certain foods aren't really all that accurate any more, or at least it's impossible to tell how accurate they are. modern farming has stripped the soil of so many nutrients, magnesium is a big one, that even if you make an effort to focus your diet on getting everything you should be getting, there's just no way to be sure you actually are. even water has less magnesium in it generally than it used to because of the treatment and filtering it goes through.

I've noticed massive improvements in my mood and anxiety since I started supplementing magnesium, even though I make an effort to eat magnesium rich foods throughout the day. Hard to know if I just need more or if the foods i'm eating are magnesium depleted, probably both.

that being said, the supplement industry is 99% bollocks.

I spend alot of time at 63 degrees north and last year it was an unbelievably dull winter. I fell in love with pickled herring. About january time i realised that the govt recommends everyone take a vitamin d supplement. I bought one and i do think it made a difference. Incidentally pickled herring is best food source of vitamin d and much loved by northern folk but its still hard to get enough from it.

    I also take magnesium.
