I'm looking to know if it's possible to buy an open return airline ticket to NY for someone. They want to go for a few days to visit a very sick relative but may need to stay for some extra time if the worst happens.
Normally the travel sites request departure and return dates. Can anyone let me know what options are available? Thanks.

Yes, you can get flexible returns.

You might want to consider buying a single though, and sorting out the return at a later date. Although, US border whatnot may require you to have a return ticket . . . I can't remember.

If you really want to have a return booked, then make sure that you book a flexible ticket which allows for changes. Be aware that pretty much from the outset, this is going to cost you more than just buying the cheapest fare from the web. they are cheap because they aren't flexible.

I would suggest calling up the reservations lines for some of the relevant airlines (American, Delta, United, Aer Lingus I think) and saying that you want to book a flexible return and let them take it from there.

In the case of Aer Lingus just select the flexible fare option online.

Thanks. I've decided to just go ahead and book the economy fare. The flexible fare is an expensive extra when it may not actually be used. I think the Delta fare can be changed for a fee if needed, or as a last resort a one way ticket home could also be booked.
