Has anybody been? Can you recommend a tour company? I have 10 days in Ukraine over Xmas and would love to do a day tour.

You do know that the area is still highly radioactive.

Yes, but if you stay in the safety zones it's ok.

I can't remember where I read the article (I know it was a reputable source) but its general thrust was that the effects of the Chernobyl explosion were vastly exaggerated and that apart from the immediate deaths caused by the initial explosion and exposure to the reactor core, there are very few attributable deaths due to radiation poisoning.

Certainly Chernobyl today is a wildlife paradise, due to the fact that no human lives there.

Thank for that, you know, I only discovered Reddit about 4 hours ago!

    Have you done the tour?

it [is] roughly estimated that cancer deaths caused by Chernobyl may reach a total of about 4000 [..]

Dangerously radioactive areas are forbidden to access. I know a few people who have done the trip. They all survived.

You're also tested after you leave the area it seems.

There are a few package tours you can find from google that I think are legit, you have to fly to ukraine and then they bus you from there. I remember looking it up about a year ago but I forgot most of the details (big S.T.A.L.K.E.R fan)

Yup very useful getting a radiation test done after being on the general area of a nuclear meltdown.

    LOL.

I'm sure the well trained guides aren't going to bring you into a fcuking nuclear reactor.

    This should be useful

Pripyat is probably the main area you'll end up going to, the ferris wheel is pretty well known

Still awaiting official permission from the landlady-We have 10 days in Ukraine (Zaporozhe) So I''ll be gone for 2 nights and 1 day. Said landlady is coming around though I think.

I did it. It was uh-mazingggg. Highly recommend it, and i'm not going to give too much away... all i'll say is I would put it down as one of the 'must dos' in life.

I stayed here (we were on a lads trip so didnt want anything fancy): http://dream-hostels.com/Hostels/Kiev/dreamhouse/

Everything walking distance, we took the subway a few times for the craic (talk about going back in time)

We did the Chernobyl tour with this company: https://chernobyl-tour.com/english/

Recommend them 100%. Excellent communication from initial e-mail right through. If you have the time, i'd recommend the 2 day trip. The 1 day was a great introduction, but there was so much more to see.

Bring your own packed lunch... the lunch at the canteen at the reactor is... eh.... not great.

I really enjoyed my holiday to Chernobyl. But, ever since I got back, I've had this strange pain in my wings

Remind me not to put the site of a nuclear power station explosion on my bucket list.

I value not being seen in the dark :)

For someone who doesnt want to go to Chernobyl you've got a hell of a lot of posts in this thread.

You dont want to go there. We get it. Why are you still posting?

I thought there was a bus that just drove through. Is it safe?

I've always wanted to go. Is it a pain organising a tourist visa? I did it for Russia and it was the most awkward part of the trip. It must be good if you're going for a week.
