Insurance for 2 cars?

Boardsies! I need some help with insurance. I have had my current car for over 5 years by now. The renewal was in June, paid in full, 9 months left on it. I'm buying a second car in few days. The first car was meant to kept for the missus but she's not sure about keeping it.

    2 options:
    1. 1.) How to get insurance if keeping 2 cars? Ask the current insurer (as 2 cars should be cheaper when insured together) or get cover from a different company?
    2. 2.) If one car sold I suppose it's only a case of transferring the current insurance to the other car? (probably it's not worth to cancel as it comes with penalty, I paid for the full year)

    Thank you!

If you try to get a second policy in your own name it will cost you alot as you wont have a bonus for it, your bonus can only be used on one car.

Cheapest option is if your wife has been named on your current car for 5 years is to transfer the ownership of one of them into her name and take out the second policy with her as the policy holder. She will be entitled to a 5 year introductory bonus if she can prove 5 years claims free named driving on your policy.

Check do you have Third Party Extension insurance on your policy, if you do then you can drive the "new car" as long as its not in your name ( owned by you , so put the car in your OH name ). This way once you tax and nct the car YOU should be all good to drive it anyways, your OH wont though.

I am not 100% sure but i think they are taking only half what you are entitled to up to 3 years max.

Your OH's car is also considered as yours in terms of insurance companies though. You have insurable interest on it.

Nope, all of the big insurers will allow a 5 year intro bonus for a named driver once they can prove it.

Some insurance companies will allow you to 'mirror' or at least take partial advantage of your NCB on a second policy in your own name (I was doing this up until last year when I sold the second car). You will almost certainly do it cheaper with your existing insurer than taking out a new policy with another insurer.

Thank you to all! The OH doesn't have any NCB to her name. Aahh, herself is not that fond of driving anyway. It was time for refresh, the Yaris MkI getting old (she's been very good to me over the years), getting an Ibiza 6L 1.4, which is a bit bigger and has more poke. I have few days to get the insurance sorted.

If insured only on both cars then the current insurer may Mirror ncb, subject full Lic with accidents or p-points etc... Driving other cars are only forbcars not belonging to u and partner... Sticking logbook in other person name to defraud the truth could come back to haunt u if a claim
