After a winterwagon with abit of comfort while i garage current car. Just myself in it, kinda leaning towards MK3 Mondeos

Plan to sell it on in under 6 months of purchase.

What would be best mix of

    -Comfort
    -Resale value
    -Economy
    -Reliability

    In that order

    Thanks

    406 I'd say.

Resale value is pretty much dependant on nct at that price level.

An omega might be worth a look too.

Mk3 mondeo are fairly comfortable and decent to drive but diesel's are very noisy and prone to injector and pump troubles.. a cheap one could be cheap for a reason..
I owned a 130bhp ghia mondeo and to be honest I would never buy one again. I'd pick a passat over it any day but one you will buy for a grand will most likely be well driven!!

Your taking a reliability risk with any old turbo diesel.

I would go with an sdi Octavia/Golf

Very slow but but should be reliable

Ford Focus 1.8 TDDi, old engine but more reliable than the newer TDCi engines, NCT until Aug 2016 and low mileage:

The Mondeo is a great car to drive and is decent on the road. The tdci can be a minefield with problems though.

Something like a 1.8 focus tddi or an avensis pre d4d would be the best options IMO. Finding a good example for your budget could be very tricky though. Most are well used at this stage. Also there should be no need to worry about resale value on a 1k car.

If it was me I'd opt for something petrol 1.4 or under and japanese. If you want to sell up again in 6 months these will be the easiest to sell.

The auld fella would shed tears of joy seeing me finally getting sense and buying a diesel avensis :)

I didn't intend to keep mine as long as I did. It was mildly likeable and very frugal.

Get yourself an old style passat. Best car on the road.

Been looking at 1.6 petrol eventlesses aswell, might be decent around the 800e mark as a stand in car if nct

Sorry for going abit off topic. (My milage is pretty tiny)

Why bother with a diesel then, most within your budget will be far more leggy than a similar priced petrol car.

Definitely get a decent NCTd '01 Passat for that. Be hard to pass!

I would say that the vast majority of €1000 diesel cars for sale on Donedeal at any given time need at least another €1000 spent on them before they would be any way decent.

What would your opinion be on the 1.6 petrol avensis (off the original topic i know)

I would be fairly into looking after a cars maintenance side as it's money well spent.

Plus no turbo to go wrong can't be a bad thing

Some of the vvti petrol engines in the facelift Mk1 Avensis had a tenancy to burn excessive oil but they are quite lively. The lean burn engines in the pre facelift model that were carried over from the Carina II are more reliable but you have to rev the nuts out of them to get them going.

A well maintained 1.6 Avensis is a good car but again these are in short supply within your budget.

A neglected one can suffer from oil consumption and/or oil pressure issues which very often leads to engine rebuild or replacement. Clutches are also a weak point on them so check that out thoroughly before buying.

The 4a-fe powered models are great cars. Just watch out for rust around the front windscreen and back window. Strangely this seems to effect 99 and 00 models more compared to other years.

Also a timing belt Kit and waterpump needs to be changed every 60k or 5 years so make sure these are done.
