It seems John Clarke will be starting on Nova on Sunday mornings from September 27th http://radiotoday.ie/2015/09/start-date-announced-for-john-clarkes-radio-nova-show/

Nova had posted the news earlier on Facebook, but I only just discovered it. It's great news for the station, and great news for John Clarke too. Mike Moloney will still be on the station, so I assume he'll still be doing Classic Gold Sunday along with John.

His on air rants about RTE & 2fm was my favorite thing about his show in latter years.

He starts on Sunday 27th September. Where will Mike Moloney fit in or is he taking over that Sunday Morning Slot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭Trebor176

I think Mike is to stay in his current slot, but with John Clarke doing the first couple of hours or so before him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭Trebor176

Just listening to Nova earlier, it looks like Mike Moloney will be moving to Saturdays at the same time as Sunday (10am - 2pm, but until 1pm during the rugby), and John Clarke will be taking over the 10am - 2pm Sunday slot.

Mike mentioned the duke box thing, but whether the Sunday show will be called Ireland's Biggest Dukebox, or something else entirely, remains to be seen. We shall find out soon enough anyway :)

RTE may not take legal action against Radio Nova if it is called that as the original program was called Ireland's Biggest Jukebox! Seriously though, they could be smart and call it Nova's Biggest Jukebox.

That'd still be similar enough to cause trouble. See the name issues when Colm & Jim Jim went to 2fm

Not really. FM104 own the rights the Strawberry Alarm Clock name. RTE to date have not confirmed that they copyrighted the Jukebox title

The fact that he was the head of 2fm and did fcuk all during his own time there says a lot about him. I found him very very bitter.

Spot on, Claude. I always enjoyed the Jukebox on 2FM but when he was removed from his management position his rants, while slightly amusing to listen to, should not have been allowed.

He ended quite a few 2FM careers during his tenure, some justified but others were a case of evening up old scores.

DJs that Clarke fired, Mike Moloney, Dusty Rhodes, Tony Fenton, Damien McCaul.

Isn't JC about to bump into Mr. Maloney next Sunday? That could be interesting!

Mike Moloney is moving to Saturdays from 10am - 2pm (though, 1pm during the rugby). John Clarke will be doing the 10am - 2pm slot on Sundays, so I doubt they'll be bumping into one another.

That's probably a good thing, if John's last conversation with Mike was on 2FM on the subject of redundancy!

Mike Moloneys final 2FM shows was when he filled in for John Clarke on his album show that had then moved from Friday nights to Sunday nights in around 1999 when John took over as 2FM head.
Prior to this Moloney had moved from "Moloney after midnight" (which ran for around 6 years) to lunchtime Saturdays and Sundays "Moloney at the weekend", which I think only lasted for around 9 months. Similar to the present dave Fanning show.

Of course Moloney was always a night time and overnight jock on 2FM from when he joined in 1985 along with John Clarke, even before the aforemantioned "Moloney after midnight" from 12 -2 (a show that was more live music and guest based that would pick their own music choices). It was a good show.

Be careful.now they were not fired. Some took redundancy packages others were self employed and did not have contracts renewed.

And some were put on contracts so short that there was no job stability. A rolling one month contract for instance.

That wasn't John Clarke's decision. These are all HR issues/decision's.

Can you confirm that ? I'd be pretty sure the head of the station has a little to do with contracts.

They were also both on the original Radio Nova.

So were Greg Gaughren and Ernie Gallagher. Pat Courtenay was on Chris Cary's satellite station Radio Nova International.

Has he had any digs at his former employer?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,504 ✭✭✭bbability

It's all positive. He did mention to ring him if you didn't like the music but tell everyone else if you did!

He seems to be moving forward which is good.

I did like him and his show BUT his bitter attitude towards the end turned me right off him to be honest.

He wasn't bitter. I actually found his last show on 2fm refreshing. He's been proved that the wrong decisions were made. The listenership has dropped 45% since his show was removed from mainstream radio.

Given the reaction on line yesterday morning and sources here and there in the industry, it went down pretty well yesterday.
I for one am glad to hear him and the jukebox back on FM radio.

You say he wasn't bitter, i say he was.........such is life.

A lot of shows lost listenership while he was in charge of the station.

If it went down yesterday, good luck to him. I for one won't be listening and as i said have no time for him and i'm not alone in that either.

He wasn't bitter. Anyway like JC himself said yesterday his show was all about the music. This is really a discussion about his Jukebox show not about his tenure as head of 2fm. Its unfair of you to put the two together.

I wasn't the only person to do it and him actually moving to Nova was stopped by his previous employers, so they are linked.

Also previous staff members are at Nova as well, so there's another link.

The past can't just be forgotten and brushed to one side and neither can his behavior on "Ireland's biggest jukebox" be either.

His last show was all about the music, it was him who decided to use it as his own personal way of ranting.............

In May 1999 around when John Clarke took over as Head of 2FM, as part of the stations then revamp, many of the weekend and overnight presenters were taken off the schedule, some went to other areas of RTE, such as Peter Collins, Michael McNamara (who was permanently on the weekend schedule since 1979), Lorcan Murray, Alan Corcoran, Mike Ryan, Bob Conway and Gerard Gogan.

Does anyone know the circumstances of Clarkes departure from RTE ? He said on the Nove breakfast show recently that it was nasty.

Just before the time of the debacle about Nova using the Jukebox name back in July, Will Leahy posted on Facebook that JC had reached retirement age and was taking a break from radio but would return to RTE Gold in late summer. Perhaps JC didn't want to go but if he was an RTE staffer he'd have no choice so maybe that's what he was referring to on Nova. Seems to me if he doesn't get his own way he throws a tantrum, usually on air.

+1 a bitter bitter man as i've said before. He fails to see he did himself the same that current management have done. Difference is the names mentioned above didn't behave like him.

Now that he is no longer associated with RTE, I wonder will he be "invited" to present on Xmas FM?

Unless reprogrammed a radio often won't update the name if the PI code is the same. Was a story on here of someone still having "NIRVANA" for Phantom/TX after a one day Nirvana competition on Phantom many years ago happened to be the day he stored the channel.

My car radio still shows " 98 " for a second before changing to 98fm.

By the way that car radio ( RCD310 made by Bosch and in VW cars) you pictured has a 'secret' signal strength meter.
    to bring it up:,

    (1) Hold MENU button for several seconds, display may change to showing HW and SW versions. (I believe some versions don't show this and go directly to signal strength meter so skipping Step 2)
    (2) now (if showing HW and SW versions info) press the rightmost station preset button (has an arrow on the display above it)

this brings up the 'secret' signal strength display of the station being received. I say secret because no mention of it in the user manual, its an engineering mode display (see attached pictures, showing RTE Radio 1 with a strong signal 8/8 and then with a weaker signal 4/8, you can manually tune around)

To go back to normal operation hold the MENU button again for a few seconds, or simply turn radio off and on again

I agree. He was on The Rock in the last month - Kevin's temporary license version of Nova around various parts of Ireland outside Dublin. It's good to see him moving on from Phantom after all those years with them.
