Would car insurance cover me to drive a van for a day?

Depends on what it says on your policy, not normally though and almost certainly not via a third party extension.

You'll need to do a temporary transfer. Most companies will do it though

Ask your insurer, it may cost nothing.

The only ones who can answer this question correctly is your current insurer.

Alot of companies who allow free temp transfers between cars will charge for transfer to a commercial.
DO NOT make the mistake of driving under 3rd party extension. It does not carry over to commercials in all cases ive seem.
