Is Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens the most hyped film of all time?

I for one cant wait, the hype machine on this has certainly done its job with this film. Has anything ever come close? The Phantom Menace perhaps.

I think the hype for The Phantom Menace was waaay bigger to be honest

It just feels that way with the hype around the Skelligs.

Agree with that... I can't wait for it to be released and recken they are doing everything right, including Abrams as director and trying to revert back to older feeling with less cgi! Can't wait to see older characters back either..

In fact, after reading my own post I believe they haven't hyped enough!

I don't know, I'm excited about it and I'm definitely going to watch it but I don't want to get my hopes up. At this stage it is so hyped up that nothing can live up to that. All that I hope for now is that it won't be bad

Is there THAT much hype about it (outside of the core Star Wars fanbase)?

The Matrix sequels had bigger hype that this. I think Interstellar probably had more hype too, the marketing campaign in the build up to Nolan's space masterpiece was massive. The first Avengers movie too had nerds everywhere foaming at the mouth to go see.

... within Star Wars circles, I think Phantom Menace beats it.
... within scifi/fantasy circles, I think the likes of the Matrix, The Avengers or Interstellar beats it.

I can't wait to see this but it's kinda refreshing in a way that the hype/marketing machine hasn't gone into overdrive like it does for so many other blockbuster movies. I'm sure it will start at some point but so far I'm enjoying the release date creeping up on me without much fuss :)

It is way hyped. I'm totally into it. Hoping for a great film. Looks good so far.

It's perhaps the most anticipated film. Nobody really expected to see another movie with the original Star Wars actors back in these roles some 30+ years after everyone thought Return of the Jedi was the finale.

If anything, the hype has been deliberately downplayed after what happened to the prequels.

I've not noticed much to be honest, I'm sure the full machinery of Lucasfilm and Fox will kick at the appropriate moment.

It seemed like there was more hype for both The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Jurassic Park back in 93 was seriously hyped up prior to release. It felt like a huge cultural event, even people who had no real interest in the movies were talking about the film.

Comparing levels of hype across different eras is a very tricky business. The force awakens is big news but the instruments of hype are louder, more effective and more varied now than they've ever been. So it can be hard to judge in comparison to somewhat simplier eras.

The film isn't out for another three months. The hype will go into over drive from november on. There'll be no escaping from it.

Phantom Menace was definitely more hyped. The deflation following its release was equal only to its hype.

That was the worst feeling ever after viewing a film. Will never forget it.
I so wanted to like it, but I just couldn't, it was such a disappointment.

But while ep7 is being hyped, the TPM hype did seem to be way way bigger.

Well, nobody expected the 30 year gap because everyone assumed Lucas would keep making a Star Wars movie every few years.

Even Lucas was all hints about another trilogy, 6 or 9 movies total...

Nobody expected him to park it for a generation.

    Prometheus?

Yup, its connections to Alien and Scott returning to that universe had that movie well hyped up. Plus, the trailers looked epic for it.

It's also one of those hyped up movies that then failed to live up to the hype (like Phantom Menace, Jurassic World, Dark Knight Rises). Depends on how much you liked it though. Avengers AoU was hyped up a lot too but was an epic fail for most hardcore (and many casual) fans. Interstellar also split audiences so for some the hype was justified, for others it was a massive let down.

I couldn't be more unenthused...Terminator, Alien, LOTR, Star Wars...all great franchises but they're creatively exhausted and yet...people still get excited about them. Those universes have been almost entirely explored, they're kind of vanilla now, I will never understand the mentality of the mainstream.

I'd defintiely wouldn't put Star Wars in the same bracket as Lord of The Rings and Terminator

Star Wars has bags of potential left in it

Yeah, and look how that worked out.................:(

This hasn't anything near the hype of The Phantom Menace.

You had people camping outside cinemas in the states for weeks before The Phantom Menace.

We haven't even had a full official trailer yet for The Force Awakens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

Depends what you mean by hyped.

Like, there's barely been one trailer for this. Hardly hyped.

At the moment it's moderate enough but iI imagine it will be absolutely crazy nearing Christmas once you factor in how much merchandising is gonna be going on, and things like parents desperately trying to ensure their kids get to see the film before they get their star wars stuffed stocking on Christmas day.

Won't have the same blind opportunism as tpm but it's gonna be about as hyped as anything possibly can be today.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't beat avatar's record quite easily.

Im not making the mistake i made with the phantom menace by getting all hyped up for the new instalment of Star Wars by totally avoiding the hype,i did see one trailer and it looks very promising, but i am never going to get emotionally involved with a film again as i did with the phantom menace only to be totally let down.

By all accounts it should be better than the last three.

Star Wars will go like gangbusters til the end of the decade, but law of diminishing returns will kick in.

The fact that Star Wars movies have been so sparse have kept the myth and nostalgia alive. The inevitable saturation that's coming down the line will turn Stars Wars into another mainstream franchise that will run its course and wipe away the nostaglia for future generations who have yet to see Star Wars.

    Still can't wait :D

By all that's holy, it can't possibly be worse.

Hasn't that already happened though with the prequels and RoTJ to a lesser extent?

I think that was supposed to be "dumbing down".
