hi guys im looking to buy a new 4x4 and was looking at the bmw x5 3.0d around a 2002 to 2005 reg and im just wondering are they any good as being a german diesel I would assume they would be very reliable, I was previously looking at the Nissan navara but the running costs are too much, any suggestions in regards to other options would be a great help, at the moment im driving a Daihatsu terios 1.3 and its been so reliable so I would hate to buy something newer that would not be as reliable thanks in advance

I can't see any reason why the running costs for a X5 3.0d would be lower than for a Navara. Even depreciation would be similar at that age. Depending on the mileage after 10-12 years there will be a good few things which can go bad. Brakes, injectors, even clutch. 1500 Euro/year for regular maintenance would be optimistic, imho.

thanks for that it was a very helpful tool turns out the Nissan xtrail and Honda crv are way more reliable although they are both petrol and the user reviews say the x5 is reliable but the last time I had a diesel it cost me over 2 grand in repairs it was a astra 1.7cdti and the clutch went amongst other things it was the worst car of my life and I just don't want to make the same mistake again

OP, if u buy a car that is 10-13 years old then u will make the same mistake again. you have to expect a significant issue cropping up at that age

I just don't want to get in debt with car finance I prefer to own the car and as for the age my terios is 15years old ive owned it the past 2 and a half years and all its ever cost me is 2 services at 50 quid a time and a set of tyres the only reason im getting another 4x4 is I need a bigger one, im not disagreeing with you but there has to be older cars out there that wont break the bank ?

Your not going to run a 10 - 13 year old X5 for anywhere near the same as a Terios. If your priority is reliability then forget the X5 and anything similar.

ya after doing a bit more research I have to agree ive been looking at the 2006 onwards Nissan xtrail they seem fairly decent just unsure if I should stick with petrol or if the diesel 2.2 model is any good ?

If you are going to buy a vehicle 2 tonne + weight it should be logical to expect bigger running costs than a vehicle 1.5 tonne weight. That statement is meant more of a question than a statement. It will cost more to energy to move, and the forces to stop it will be more, harder on brakepads, tyres etc.The general running costs of an x5 must be in a different bracket to a 5 series.Obviously there are exceptions but if you buy a tank, then you will have the costs that come with it.Am i wrong in that line of thinking.

oh ya I know that and I don't mind the higher day to day running costs its more the reliability of the vehicle im concerned about and price of repairs

There's a lot of middle ground between a terios and an X5.
Not to talk you out of it, but have you looked at other models too.

Big difference in size, comfort etc. between an X5 and something like an Xtrail. I think you need to narrow the field a bit - Santa Fe ??

Look at a petrol Toyota Rav4 or Honda CRV, both are very reliable and have modest running costs.

Do you really need a 4x4 that size? Them x5s aren't great towing or off road compared to landcruiser or pajero etc. To me they're not much good at anything and with a 3.0d should be able compete with the others but they just ain't in the same league
